Holy Crap! I laughed all the way through this one and it was such a guilty
pleasure that I kept looking about to make sure no one else so what I was
watching! First things first, Happy Tree Friends is not what it appears to be
by any stretch of the imagination! Uber Violent and certainly not one for the
kiddies, HTF is plain and simple sick, and I LOVED it! There are 12 episodes
on this DVD followed up by a great selection of extras.
Basically the
entire premise of the Happy Tree Friends is that very bad things happen to
very cute little animals. They all have their own little names however my
favourite would have to be Handy, the no armed construction worker. If you
don't have a bit of a dark side to you then some of this stuff will leave you
feeling very cold and wondering who the hell could possibly think it was
funny.
Deaths are
gruesome and as the guys say during the audio commentary, they've tried during
each episode to make each death more graphic than the last and for the most
part fully succeeded.
All of the episodes aside, as good as they are, this DVD is such a great
overall package with an absolute swag of extras that will continue to
entertain long after the shock of watching bunnies die horrible deaths has
died off.
There is
interactivity for those of you who just can't get enough of, well, interaction
with 4 Smoochies to play with. A Smoochie is sort of like a Tamagotchi but one
of the HTF's is on the screen and you can click on the menu to make certain
events happen to the creatures. As you might have guessed, none of them turn
out well!
In particular
I enjoyed the audio commentary from the team. Asides from genuine insights
into the process of making a Happy Tree Friend episode, there were a lot of
jokes made that had me laughing along with the creators as the explained what
the scenes were about and a particular fascination with Raiders of the Lost
Ark (watch to find out what I am referring to). The extras are so packed in
fact that you will find even more episodes in there for you to watch as well!
If you really
want to spoil yourself with Happy Tree Friends, go deeper than the episodes
and make sure you listen to all area that involve commentary. Another standout
area is character designs and concept development where they basically spend
the entire time laughing at their own lame drawings of enfeebled characters.
I'm not sure if they just like the sound of their own voices but the end
result is simply hilarious and quite frankly would amount to one of the most
enjoyable audio commentaries that I have heard to date on ANY DVD, regardless
of the genre.
This disc
runs for about 140 minutes and seriously is so much fun that you won't notice
that time pass at all. It's not for everyone and the humour is very off colour.
If you don't take yourself too seriously and like a good old fashioned belly
laugh, then take the time and do yourself and a loved one a favour and pick
this DVD up from your local store. There are two others in the series and we
look forward to bringing them to you as they are released!
