Five reasons to get a MacBook for Christmas

Five reasons to get a MacBook for Christmas

It’s that time of the year! Some of us may be looking out to get a present for our loved ones, or even as a reward for ourselves.

If you are looking at a new laptop, a new MacBook may just be what Santa would have ordered. Below are some reasons why you may want to get a MacBook.

Still the sleekest laptop around

Despite the many hybrid PC designs available today, the slim and functional design of the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air is as timeless as it is sleek. What’s more, its established form factor meant that accessory makers have had ample time to produce all sorts of accessories for it (from custom-fitted protective shells, protectors for the keyboard and track pad, and even SD cards that you can leave in the media card slot).  And if you travel a lot, you’ll appreciate the lightness of both MacBook laptops (hey, anything adds up when you are running late to your plane!)

The champ of battery life

MacBook laptops have attained a reputation for excellent runtimes that is rarely matched by other laptops. Indeed, recent versions to the OS X operating system have adopted measures to take your battery mileage further by highlighting apps that are sucking up a significant amount of power–allowing you to easily identify and shut the battery suckers down.

Work-friendly features

MacBook machines are designed to offer the most important hardware and software features that you would want from a work machine. This includes a comfortable, full-sized keyboard, a superb trackpad good enough to leave the mouse at home, and an excellent ventilation system that keeps the machine cool to the touch. Also, simply swipe two fingers along the trackpad to scroll through a long document, or twist your thumb and forefinger to rotate an image–the list goes on. Once you master gestures, you will wonder why would anyone want to touch their screen (you can start here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmatZsNet3E)

OS X Yosemite

OS X Yosemite is the latest version of the operation system for the Mac. Not only does it look prettier than ever, Yosemite sports a variety of features that plays well with your iPhone and iPad (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrxtbB-z2Sc), as the latest Apple advertisement humorously points out. This includes Continuity, which is a suite of features that allows you to seamlessly switch between your Apple devices, such as using your Mac to receive an incoming phone call from your iPhone. In addition, features such as AirDrop and AirPlay offer fuss-free wireless file transfers and wireless video mirroring respectively.

Continue running your Windows apps

Finally, in the event that you still want to run your Windows apps (yes, for that annoying expense report that only runs well on Excel for Windows! J), the state of desktop virtualisation on the Mac has matured to the stage that Windows will “just work”. Parallels Desktop for example, offers the ability to automatically strip away the Windows desktop to run your Windows programs like a native apps. This means that you can continue to work on your Windows-only or legacy work applications without missing a beat.
