Field Of Dreams 4K + Blu-ray Limited Edition Lenticular Hardcase + Art Cards Review
Summary: If you release it, they will come! Baseball brings people together in more ways than usual in this supernatural sports film with feeling.
4.8
Fantastical Field
Bear with me… I’m not a Baseball fan. Why then would I be watching/reviewing a film all about a man building a baseball field on his farm? Because Field Of Dreams transcends the sport and draws viewers into a story with spirit (in more ways than one).
For those unfamiliar (the film was released in 1989 so I will assume people born after a certain period may have never heard of it), the story involves Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella who hears a voice while out in his corn field, telling him “if you build it, he will come”. After determining that he should sacrifice part of his corn fields to make a baseball field he does just that. But the voice doesn’t stop… even with spectral baseball players now playing in his field… he is still being directed to perform further feats. This is where the story draws in even viewers who don’t know two things about baseball… the curiosity over what is going on and what will happen next.
This is a lovely transfer of the film and with the exception of maybe one or two scenes in which the colour seemed a little off, in the sense of lacking a bit of vibrancy/saturation (I suspect simply a result of the equipment of the time and nothing to do with the quality of the transfer) it is a pleasure to behold. The sound is also nice and clear, with a decent bit of surround in certain scenes that really adds a nice bit of immersion.
The packaging itself is nicely done here too. The cover is presented in lenticular format to give it a bit more depth and vibrancy. Included are also a collection of art cards with scenes from the movie, great for the collectors. The disc itself also has a nice collection of extra features and as someone who has been with the disc formats since DVD’s (not as far back as laserdiscs) I appreciated the easter egg (is it just me or are these less common now).

Final Thoughts?
I haven’t watched Field of Dreams for many years (I am talking decades)… I had a vague recollection of it but I was pleasantly surprised to find it still holds great charm (and the scene at the parent teacher association meeting is still all too relevant). If you are a fan of the film, this set is a great buy… lovely image and audio with a great presentation (the lenticular hard case is a numbered limited edition). If you haven’t seen the film before… don’t let the notion that it centers around baseball put you off… it is a lovely film with a heartwarming story. Grab a copy now.
