Fall from Grace Interview … Aussie gamer and YouTuber!
Welcome to Impulse Gamer Grace!
Thank you so much for having me!
Congrats on reaching 90,000 subscribers and over 3 million views on YouTube! That’s really some awesome work! So what does it feel like being a YouTube celebrity?
I have never felt like a celebrity and I certainly don’t consider myself as one. It still blows me away that people enjoy my content and it’s very flattering. It’s surreal sometimes though when I go into a GTA lobby for example and I get people messaging me saying ‘I love your videos’ and freaking out because they’ve been in the same game as me. It’s a very strange feeling because I just sit in my room, playing games and uploading videos so I don’t feel like I’m famous in any way. The craziest experience so far has been meeting people at events that watch my videos and being asked for photos and autographs.
Can you tell us what your more mainstream friends think about your online videos?
Honestly most of my friends are gamers or they’re very active online in some way, so it’s a world that they’re accustomed too. However sometimes they like to give me an ego boost and treat me like I’m a big deal haha. My friends and family are very supportive of what I do, they see that it makes me happy so they’re all for it.
So what made you decide to start doing YouTube videos?
I was a watcher for a long time. There were 4 main people who influenced me to make my own videos. Pewdiepie, Cryaotic, The Syndicate Project and Jenna Marbles. The first 3 obviously are avid gamers and I’ve always loved their gaming content. Jenna inspired me because of her attitude, she doesn’t pretend to be someone she’s not and I really respect that. After thinking about it for a long time I decided to buy a PVR and start recording gameplays. I thought I could offer a new perspective to the world of gaming because I hadn’t found any Australian gamers on YouTube that were female. It was difficult in the beginning finding myself and figuring out what kind of content I wanted to produce. I have come a long way from where I started THANK GOD because I can’t stand watching my early videos haha.
How do you come up with your themes for YouTube?
I try to keep my content varied but at the same time relevant. I look at what titles are coming out that I think will be popular and I try to come up with videos that I think people would enjoy. At the same time though I only make videos that I have fun making otherwise I just feel like YouTube is a job and I don’t want to get bored with it. I am not full time on YouTube so it is still a fun hobby for me. Creative freedom is important to me and always has been as I have a background in Graphic Design. YouTube is no different, as soon as I have someone telling me what I should and shouldn’t do I feel like I’ll lose interest and I don’t want that to happen. I brainstorm a lot, I have a ton of notebooks where I write dot points for videos. I try to improve on every video that I upload. Not only the quality of the video but my commentary etc. I am a total perfectionist which can be annoying sometimes, especially when I’ve recorded the same commentary 20 times and I’m still not 100% happy with it haha.
Originally gaming was more a male domain, can you tell us some of your thoughts on gender equality in gaming?
The gaming community is definitely becoming more equal. If you were a female gamer a few years ago you were considered extremely rare but today they’re more common. I’ve seen this evolve not only through being on YouTube but also working in a retail video games store. I think it’s great that more females are seeing that games are for them as well and legitimately enjoy playing them. I think developers are becoming more aware of this too as it seems more games are coming out with character gender options and customisation. Some may argue that females in games are still very sexualised in their appearances but I choose not to get offended by that, I just embrace the beauty of the female form.
As a gamer, what was the first game you played and how do you think that changed your life?
I have always loved video games. I have photos of me and my older brother playing Nintendo NES when I was only a few years old. But the first game that I really played and that began my passion for video games is Assassins Creed 1. I absolutely fell in love with the series and gaming as a whole after playing through it. So much so that I genuinely had a bit of a crush on Ezio in AC2 & Brotherhood and I cried real tears at the end of AC: Revelations. I am an absolute sucker for a game with a rich story line and another series that I love because of that is Bioshock. Bioshock Infinite was such an incredible game and the ending absolutely blew my mind. When you invest time into a game and truly immerse yourself, it’s amazing what games can make you feel.
What are you currently playing at the moment?
Currently I’m playing through the GTA V Heists, COD: AW Exo Zombies and The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. GTA has been huge for my channel and my subscribers show so much support for those videos, and of course it’s a great game to play with friends and have a good time.
I’ve always loved Call of Duty, I still remember playing ‘Finest Hour’ on PS2 with my dad all those years ago. The latest COD is a very new direction for the franchise and I’m really enjoying it. The new exo zombies is so intense, I’ve only managed to get to round 18 solo so far!
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a game that I play purely for myself, and because of that I love it so much. YouTube has changed the way I game, I sometimes feel guilty if I’m gaming and not creating content, but Isaac is my exception. If you’ve never heard of it, definitely give it a try!
At present, what is your favourite console or PC system and why?
This is the hardest question for any multiplatform gamer! I enjoy the ease of sitting back with my PS4 controller and playing COD for example, it’s just so easy. But I have to say I love my desktop PC. I had it built for me about 3 years ago and it still runs everything seamlessly on Ultra graphic settings. I don’t want to go all ‘PC MASTER RACE’ on you guys but PC really is a whole other ballgame from console. Don’t get me wrong, I really love the PS4 (which is a shock to me because I’ve always been an Xbox fangirl) but the PC offers so much more. Not only can it run games on graphic settings consoles have not quite been able to match yet, but it’s more functional for other things like internet browsing, editing videos, running programs etc.
Describe your dream PC rig?
I LOVE my PC at the moment. It’s basically R2D2 haha. I would have to stick with a white case, my whole gaming setup is White, Black and Blue. So I’d have a white case with nothing but the best inside, dual SLI EVGA GeForce Titans just for the hell of it, a huge SSD so I can have all my editing programs and some games installed on there and water cooling with tons of blue LEDs inside. I’ve always wanted to run a 3 screen setup but my current desk can’t hold anything else! My rig at the moment may be a little outdated but it still does the job, so if I were to upgrade I wouldn’t spare any expense! Inb4 I have the same PC for another 2-3 years haha.
What is your most anticipated title that you are looking forward to in 2015?
Funnily enough it’s probably GTA V on PC, I feel like I’ve been waiting for it for years! I’m really interested to see what mods people have on offer because I’ve never really gotten into that side of PC gaming as of yet! Having said that there are some other titles I’m super keen for; The Division, Rainbox Six: Siege and Quantum Break.
What is your favourite game ever and also the worst you have played?
Asking all the tough questions haha! I have to say Bioshock Infinite is my favourite game – but it’s tied with Assassins Creed: Revelations, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim & Red Dead Redemption. The story line in Bioshock is just too much, I still think about it sometimes and the game has been out for over 2 years! I don’t want to ruin it in case someone reading this hasn’t played it yet… but honestly, so many feels.
The worst game I’ve played recently would have to be Call of Duty: Ghosts. I really didn’t like Ghosts. I tried to like it but it just didn’t work for me. I’m glad they went in a new direction with Advanced Warfare and I’m excited to see what Treyarch do with the franchise this year!
Who is the coolest gaming character and why?
Ezio Auditore Da Firenza hands down. A badass Italian Assassins, what’s not to love!
What are you most looking forward to on Twitch TV?
Honestly all I want is to be able to stream a game with no lag at a decent resolution. I have been trying to get my Twitch channel out there lately by doing more livestreaming but it’s really difficult with my bad Australian internet. I’m currently getting 4.0mbps download and 0.7mbps upload, so it’s not an easy task. My followers have been super supportive though and I actually just hit 1,000 followers on Twitch! So I’d love to be able to stream more consistently with good quality and work towards becoming a Twitch Partner. The ability to connect with my viewers live and feed off of their energy is so exciting!
Grace, what’s the geekiest thing that you own and what is it?
I’d have to say my gaming related statues and figures. I am an absolute sucker for special editions of games, naturally I have a Bioshock Infinite statue and multiple Assassins Creed figures. I can’t say that any of my other female friends have them in their bedroom haha.
Besides gaming, what else do you get up?
I have plenty to keep me busy outside of gaming! Work doesn’t count because it’s at a video game store haha but I’m studying a Diploma of Business through an online college, I think it’s really important to be educated. Especially in this day and age because it can be really difficult to find a decent job without some kind of qualification. I’m also a bit of a health freak so when I’m not working, studying or gaming I’m usually at the gym, or doing something outdoors.
Where can fans find out more about you?
My YouTube channel is probably the best place to get to know me. I’m trying to be more personal in my videos, Q&A’s are usually good for that kind of thing! Otherwise my social media accounts are a good place to go as well. My Twitter is www.twitter.com/imfallfromgrace, My Facebook page is www.facebook.com/iamfallfromgrace and my Instagram is www.instagram.com/iamfallfromgrace
Lastly what else does 2015 hold for you?
Hopefully some more events! Last year I went to EB Games Expo in Sydney, PAX AUS in Melbourne and the Ubisoft Offices in Sydney… I’d love a chance to go to some international events but the cost is a huge factor for me! And of course, hopefully hitting the 100,000 subscriber milestone on my channel!
Thanks for your time Grace and all the best for 2015! Hopefully we can see you at E3 one year!
