New independent research conducted on behalf of ECOVACS shows that Australians are placing a higher value on cleanliness than ever before, especially as it relates to its impact on physical and mental well-being and improving the household environment. This extensive research revealed that Australians are vacuuming their homes on average 2.5 times a week in 2024, a 20% increase from the same time two years ago. This is despite time being a major pressure on Australians, with most Australians going to bed each night not having achieved everything they had hoped that day.

Furthermore, 89% of Australians surveyed are open to robotics in their home if they can help clean and save time, an 11% increase in just two years. Two out of three Australians are interested in AI-powered appliances if it can help in their everyday lives, while 59% of those surveyed were hoping to buy a robotic vacuum cleaner in the near future.

Relevant Insights from ECOVACS Local Market Research

The importance of home cleanliness:

  • The importance of Cleanliness for surveyed Australians has increased in 2024, showing a 3% to 5% growth across several aspects compared to 2022.
  • 80% of Australians vacuum their homes weekly (averaging 2.5 days per week). This is a 20% increase from 2022 (2.1 days)
  • Cleanliness is highly valued for its benefits to physical and mental well-being (93%) and for improving household environments (92%). Time-saving is also important but slightly less so, at 87%.

Our greatest resource – Time:

  • Australians report that 4 out of 7 days feel too short to accomplish their needs, highlighting significant daily stress.

Opinions and openness to Robot Vacuums:

  • Openness to robotic assistance has significantly increased, rising from 80% in 2022 to 89% in 2024, marking an 11% growth.
  • Vacuums, particularly robotic ones, are highly desired by 46% of people, with 30% specifically wanting robotic vacuums. RVCs have remained the top most desired technology appliance between 2022 and 2024.
  • Performance, functionality, ease of use, and price are the top priorities for 88-91% of consumers. Environmental impact (49%) and colour (35%) are less significant. Importance of Colour has declined by 12% compared to 2022.
  • Robotic vacuums are widely popular, with 17% of consumers currently owning one and 59% planning to buy one.
  • Ownership of robotic vacuum cleaners has grown by 24% since 2022 (14% → 17%).

How is the Cost of Living impacting Aussie consumers and buying decisions:

  • 51% are significantly affected by rising living costs and have made major changes to their spending habits, while 49% are in a more manageable situation, making minor changes or none at all.

How Australians feel about AI in the home:

  • Interest in AI-powered appliances is also high (62%), though slightly lower than home robotics more broadly. AI is more appreciated by younger consumers (67% vs. 57% older) and those already open to robotics (74% vs. 19% opposed).
