The Secret of the Magic Gourd is based on the children's novel of
the same name and revolves around a curious little boy who discovers
a mysterious object that can make his wishes all come true.
Unfortunately the old saying of "be careful what you wish for" comes
into play and our young hero suffers from a variety of comedic
mishaps.
Interesting enough, this is Disney's first attempt at breaking the
Chinese market as the movie is set within China and also uses state
of the art CGI to help tell the tale. The movie is co-directed by
John Chu and Frankie Chung who truly create a great children's movie
that can be watched by children all over the world.
The story begins with our young hero whose life is horrible, always
being teased or taken down a level. When he runs away from school
one day, he discovers a mystical lake where he decides to try his
"luck" at fishing.
Unfortunately nothing goes his way and he eventually falls asleep,
only to be awaken as something has been caught on his rod which is
the Gourd itself. From there, the Gourd promises his hearts content.
Unfortunately every wish that is granted does goes wrong and
together they must undo the magic that they have created. This is
the "magic" the story.
The film features some stunning video and audio quality which is
presented in Widescreen 16:9 with extraordinary images and vibrant
colours. Of course, the star of the movie is that of the Gourd
himself that is matched well with Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. This
presentation also contains some interesting special features with a
hilarious bloopers reel and a behind the scenes featurette.
Hopefully we can see more of these international Disney films!
