Centring primarily on perennial
good guy Eric Foreman (Topher Grace) and set in the 1970s (Duh!)
That ‘70’s Show follows
the lives of a group of friends as they grow up, dealing with love,
sex, family and their budding futures; all done through the
nostalgic haze of ‘70’s culture and played for over the top laughs.
The strength of
That ‘70s Show is the
cast – both young and old - that bring their somewhat clichéd
characters to life. Grace and Prepon (as love interest Donna) play
straight-men to their outlandish friends, Ashton Kutcher as the
idiot egomaniac Kelso, his girlfriend the annoying Jackie (Mila
Kunis), Exchange student Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) and bad boy Hyde
(Danny Masterton). The characters of Fez and Hyde provide most of
the laughs, Fez because of his clueless ness of American customs,
and Hyde because he is able to cut through any situation with a
biting sarcastic wit.
As good as the young cast is they
are often upstaged by the actors playing their parents, Kurtwood
Smith as Eric’s stubborn grumpy father Red Forman easily the
standout. However Debra Jo Rupp as Eric’s nutty mother Kitty gives
him a run for his money. Their interactions with Donna’s idiot
parents Bob (Don Stark) and Midge (Tanya Roberts) are always fun to
watch - if only to watch the contempt on Red’s face whenever Bob
opens his mouth.
The ‘70s setting does allow for
many laughs to be had at the expense of the fashions, attitudes
(hilarious re-dubbed educational videos) and events of the time,
with a laugh out loud moment guaranteed almost every episode
(Kelso’s interpretation of Eric’s Sister’s speech is particularly
hilarious). If you are after something different than “hanging out,
down the street, the same old thing you did last week” look no
further than a couple of hours watching
That 70’s Show.
A smattering of special features
are included; a behind the scenes and trivia featurette plus promo
spots.
