Pride and Glory
There’s been an influx of police movies during the last
few years and Pride and Glory is just another attempt at Hollywood to
showcase the grim and gritty underworld. Order versus Chaos, Police
versus Criminals… however nothing is ever black and white and Pride and
Glory once again showcases this.
Set in New York, Pride and Glory is directed by Gavin O’Connor and
features a star studded cast that includes Edward Norton, Colin Farrell
and Jon Voight who truly transcend into their characters, especially the
chameleon like Norton.
The story revolves around the murder of four police men during a drug
bust that unfortunately doesn’t sit too well with the Chief of Manhattan
Detectives, Francis Tierney, Snr (Voight). Francis convinces his son
(Norton) to lead an investigation into their deaths, however as he
becomes deeper involved in the mystery, he discovers that this is not an
open and closed case, especially as his older brother Francis (Noah
Emmerich) and his brother in-law Jimmy (Colin Farrell) know more than
they should.
Although the story is engaging and time will pass without any issues,
this is where the title of the movie comes into play, Pride and Glory
that although is an above average movie, it suffers from the “been
there, done that philosophy”. Norton is caught between two worlds in
this crime thriller that is well acted, cast and set, however something
just seems to be missing in order to move this story onto the next
level. Ultimately, Pride and Glory is an enjoyable movie that as many
before it, will eventually become forgotten in the annals of movie
history.
