Power and Passion: The Technology of Orgasm
Narrated
by Gerri Lawlor, Passion & Power: The Technology of Orgasm is an
interesting documentary that takes the viewer through the history of the
female orgasm.
From the
repressed Victorian era of female sexuality to the modern technology
world of sex toys and the like, Passion & Power: The Technology of
Orgasm is truly a strange, serious and light hearted look on women’s
sexuality through the ages.
Some of the highlights
include
the
craziness of culture, more specifically American culture where Joanne
Webb created the idea of “Passion Parties” which allowed women to hold
parties to showcases various sex toys and unfortunately for Joanne, she
was arrested on obscenity charges.
Want
more strange facts? Funnily enough, this documentary also traces the
history of the vibrator which can be traced back to 1883 when the
world’s first electromechanical vibrator was created. This device even
found its way onto the markets a short time after that, however when
they began appearing in pornography, objections from the right wing soon
started.
The
documentary focuses on the Women’s Liberation of the 60’s and how a new
sexual revolution began which not just focused on men but now the other
sex. As you can see, Passion & Power: The Technology of Orgasm
is a very insightful documentary that uses actual footage, interviews
with a variety of women such as Betty Dodson who started the
masturbation movement for women and other political movers and shakerss.
