Big is beautiful.
That my friends is the premise behind Phat Girlz (notice the funky
spelling of phat?). Starring Mo’nique, yet another person who only
has one name, she plays the part of a girl who is trying to set up a
fashion label for larger girls and hitting walls at every turn. Life
however shows a very different reality for her and her plus sized
mates who work at a department store and don’t really see themselves
ever finding a man who will love them for who they are.
Having won a competition, Jazmin (Mo’Nique) gets to go to a resort
in Palm Springs and has an adventure that will see her finding love
and success. There is an underlying theme behind everything that
occurs in the story and that is simply to grab life by the horns
regardless of who you are and this certainly rings true to this
viewer.
This is a feel good movie that will have you laughing out loud at
times. Mo’Nique does a fantastic job as Jazmin and the movie is very
watchable all the way through, despite some pacing problems rearing
their head, editing should have been looked at a bit more carefully
on this one as it just seems to drag a tad. Featuring elements that
most of us can relate to, this is ultimately a feel good adventure
that should appeal to most viewers.
