Nine Months
Nine Months follows the life of waspy child psychologist Samuel Faulkner
(Hugh Grant) who predictably doesn’t want a child of his own to mess up
his perfect life. Unfortunately his girlfriend Rebecca (Julianne Moore)
does want one, and she is soon with child, weather Samuel likes it or
not – he doesn’t (crashing his beautiful Porsche following Rebecca’s
revelation). Hilarity ensues as Samuel predictably comes to grips with
his impending fatherhood – helped along (or hindered) by serial parents
Martin and Gail Arnold (Tom Arnold and Joan Cusack respectively).
Nine Months is a very formulaic comedy which does produce a couple of
big laughs (Tom Arnold going toe to toe with a Barney the Dinosaur
knock-off easily the highlight), but doesn’t offer anything new or
particularly memorable in the way of story or character. Robin Williams
does his whacky shtick as incompetent Dr. Kosevich, Arnold brings his
usual loud-mouth style to the character of Martin and Grant is his usual
foppish self. Moore brings considerable emotion to the part of Rebecca
but even she is wasted in this formulaic flop.
The only extras included are a theatrical trailer, how unfortunate those
responsible didn’t include any footage that referenced the controversy
that surrounded the film when Grant was caught with prostitute Divine
Brown. The incident, instead of ruining his career, propelled it
further, leading to many films far greater than the forgettable Nine
Months.
