There was a time when comedy knew no boundaries and politically
correctness was just a "theory" for academics and whether it was Benny
Hill or Faulty Towers, British comedy has definitely made a huge
impact on the world of humour. With this, came a plethora of great
British comedy series and of course "Mind Your Language"
is part of that comedy mythology.
Originally airing in 1977 in England
which also followed an Australian release, Mind Your Language
revolved around Mr. Jeremy Brown, a TAFE-like English teacher who
was given the task of teaching "migrants" how to speak English. The
star of the series was Barry Evans who played the straight man
English teacher who attempted to reign his students together, however
as per usual, something would always go wrong.
The series contained
almost every stereotype of the era, whether it was "Greek"
or
"Italian" accidents and misinterpretations or the sexy nymphs who
always tried to get the better of Mr. Brown, the series went from
funny to hilarious. Where the series shined is through the events
that
were created by these misunderstanding of English and to compound the
situation, Headmistress miss Courtney played a "thorn" in Mr.
Brown's side as he attempted to control his wayward students.
The
series was definitely politically incorrect, however if you can
ignore this aspect and respect the series for what it was, Mind Your
Language Series 1 is a brilliant British comedy series. Add in some
in great commentary by the writer and some of the original cast and
this is one enjoyable trip down memory lane.
