2008 seems to be the year of the
comedic "take-offs" and Meet the Spartans is another one of those movies
that takes the Mickey out of "series" action movies with the main
theme of this title being that of "The 300".
Although the theme is Meet the Spartans,
the film literally pays homage to a wide variety of pop culture
preferences from Britney Spears to Paris Hilton in some extremely
hilarious scenes.
The story revolves
around Leonidas, the King of Sparta and when his kingdom is
challenged by the Xerxes, an earth-bound godlike entity, he is
forced to recruit Sparta’s greatest 300… err 13 warriors who are a
true band of bumbling misfits and himbos.
Although the story may be quite forced and
contrived at times, it successfully rip-offs from the Transformers
to Casino Royale which is quite amusing and really helps spice up
that may have been quite a bland movie.
With that
said, many of the gags were quite bad but it features some great
memorable moments from Kevin Sorbo (Hercules: The Legendary Journey)
and Ken Davitian (Borat) that is still making me smile as I write
this review.
Presented in an aspect ratio of 16:9 widescreen with Dolby Digital
5.1, the DVD version features some unseen footage, a great gag-reel
and also some behind the scene featurettes. It’s forced, it’s
contrived and entertaining that is definitely for those viewers who enjoyed
the Scary Movies franchise.
