Man Vs Wild: Urban Jungle Warrior
Hosted
by Bear Grylls, Man Vs Wild is an amazing adventure every episode with
Bear telling you how to survive in a whole variety of situations. The
idea is to be immersed into a perilous situation and then Bear basically
talks you through the situation, eats everything in sight, uses nature
and found objects and does his best to be rescued.
I found this utterly fascinating. Whilst I know that Bear has his camera
team there and an advisor, they are really all doing what he is
preaching and some of the things he is doing do present a very real and
extreme danger. Of particular interest is the fact that Bear will often
acknowledge his team, pass things to them and the like.
The scenarios that Bear finds himself in are amazing, and some of the
tricks he does to get himself out of a bind are utterly incredible.
Whilst of course I have no idea how much information comes from his own
knowledge or how much is given to him by his team, he is a very
resourceful man and as the host of the show is a veritable font of
information for ideas if you got stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Of
particular interest were some of the ways that Grylls collects water
from inhospitable, arid places.
This show is a fine mix of survival and the insane. One example of this
was in Montana when Grylls climbs up to the top of a bridge that has an
overhang that he can't see over. He proceeds to just throw a chain over
and swings out into nothingness before climbing up to the top. Remember
he is at least 100 metres in the air and a drop will most certainly kill
him.
This is a great series that had me hooked from the very first episode
till the last. By the end of it I was certain that I too could just be
dumped into the middle of nowhere and make my own way out! Of course
that is not the case, but we at least got to see a man who is able to
survive in the wild and is good enough to explain just how he did it.
This series covered a large number of locales and from what I can
ascertain, were part of season 4 of the original broadcast.
Bear Grylls is a fantastic presenter who really seems to love what he
does. His natural enthusiasm is highly infectious and he doesn't shy
away from showing you even the unpleasant side of staying alive when
nature wants you dead, even giving himself an enema so that he can stay
hydrated with stagnant water! Add to this a willingness to eat whatever
is in his way, raw or cooked and you are in good survival hands.
Great series! Highly recommended.
