Ichi
I'm
a sucker for a babe with a sword and to throw another twist into the
mix, this beautiful heroine is blind. Majestically filmed, choreographed
and acted, this Eastern Eye story centres on Ichi, a blind musician who
is searching the lands for a masseur that raised her as a child.
Unfortunately he vanished from her life and now Ichi is seeking answers
and no-one is going to stop her for these answers. The movie opens up with
Ichi killing a man who attempted to take advantage of her with our
heroine bolding stating that just because she is blind, she still knows
how to take care of herself. More specifically, kick some serious ass.
The movie is quite dramatic at times, especially the flashbacks of Ichi
growing up and how her foster father taught her how to fight and how her
life fell apart.
On
her journey, she meets a Samurai who has lost the spirit to fight and to
compound the situation, she becomes embroiled in a war between two clans,
one human and one inhuman, the Banki who know about the masseur that she
is seeking. Ichi also befriends a small boy who gives her life meaning
and in essence is her guide which adds an interesting twist to the
movie and in her dark world, provides her with the light she needs.
The
action scenes in Ichi really kick some serious ass as she swings her
Samurai sword like a professional, cutting down all men and monsters in her way. So
be warned, if you're offended by blood, you might want to leave this
movie alone because the red blood sprays everywhere.
With
stunning video quality, sharp images and a vibrant colour palette, Ichi
features a great soundtrack (thanks to Lisa Gerrard from Gladiator) that really helps in immersing you into this
story and it looks like I'll need to hunt this soundtrack down because
of her. The movie is presented in 16:9 widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1
In
conclusion, Ichi is a Samurai movie that focuses on a female lead in
some classic Samurai scenarios that is oozing with action and has an
interesting storyline that is easy to follow and quite enjoyable. Add in
the some interesting special features such as a behind the scenes
featurette and this nicely compliments the feature.
Very
entertaining!
