Rudderless twentysomethings Becky and Steve
have set their sights so low that the slackest of Gen X slackers would
be hard-pressed to compete with their lack of ambition - all they want
to do is get high, bludge off work and have sex, and in this and several
like regards the pair succeed admirably. Aided and abetted by a
revolving door supporting cast of friends, siblings and parents, their
earthy shenanigans frequently ring true and are guaranteed to raise a
titter or twelve.
Produced by Big Talk, the outfit
responsible for such comedic juggernauts as Black Books,
Spaced, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Him & Her
has charmed audiences in its native UK with its crass warts-and-all
(perhaps farts-and-all would be a more appropriate term) evocation of
modern day de facto life, and makes its Region 4 debut courtesy of
Madman in a handsome 2-disc set positively brimming with bonus
features.
Whilst perhaps not as sharp as some of its
stablemates in terms of writing or characterisation (it aims far
broader, for one thing), this bawdy, oftentimes wilfully lewd comedy
engenders an easy affection thanks in large part to the palpable
on-screen chemistry shared by its two likable leads. Many of the
situations and indeed entire swathes of conversation will be instantly
recognisable to those of a similar age group to Becky and Steve, the
latter of whom is played to gormless perfection by Being Human’s
Russell Tovey, and if not entirely earth-shattering in terms of writing
or setup the series nonetheless comprises a clever, fun and occasionally
filthy sitcom that seems certain to find as wide an audience on these
shores as it did in its homeland.
