Flashbacks of a Fool stars the current James Bond, Daniel Craig as
Joe Scott, a down and out Hollywood star who has been a victim of
his lifetime that included sex, drugs and not Rock 'n' Roll but
alcohol. Director Baillie Walsh who is also the writer of this at
times rather clever drama movie revolves around one man's decisions
in life that through personal reflection may have lead to something
different.
The films begins with Joe hearing the sad news that a close
childhood friend who has passed away and this causes him to
reminisce of better days. From there a tale of today and yesterday
begins that includes the relationship between his childhood friend
Boots (Max Deacon) and Harry Eden who plays the young Joe.
In
the present, Joe relies on his housekeeper for friendship that is
quite hollow at times due to the current lifestyle and attitudes of
our main character. Through the use of "flashbacks", the viewer is
eventually introduced to the innocent Joe who in the course of his
girlfriend Ruth (Felicity Jones) is introduced to the work of rock
'n' roll and eventually Evelyn, their desperate housewife who
seduces Joe and leads him onto the path where he is today.
Although Flashbacks of a Fool has its moments, especially Daniel
Craig who seems to be having a ball playing Joe, the flashbacks are
a little forced if not contrived for the viewer. With that said,
Flashbacks of a Fool is depressing, however at the end of the day,
it's a cleverly written drama that has its moments but in terms of
memorable, it is a little lacking in this department. Needless to
say, it's interested to see the stoic Craig as someone not as
serious as James Bond.
