D.Gray Man Collection
This
Gothic anime series is set during the 19th Century and is heavily
influenced by this period, including a touch of the Renaissance as
viewers are drawn into a never ending battle between good versus evil.
Interestingly enough, this series is steeped quite deeply in
Christianity in relation the links to certain key events in the bible.
With that said, the main theme of D.Gray-Man is the battle between the
exorcists (humans) and the Akuma (demons) who were created by the
Millennium Earl. The main character in the series is Allen Walker who
was adopted early on life by Mana Walker, his foster father and mentor.
It should also be noted that Allen's hand is deformed which he believes
may have been the reason his birth parents left him.
To compound the situation for Allen, his adoptive father Mana dies and
the mysterious being known as the Millennium Earl offers him a chance of
reviving his father that he accepts. Unbeknown to Allen, his father
returns, however not as a man but rather an Akuma. Allen's curse does
not stop there and his curse also allows him to see Akuma's disguised as
humans which makes for some great story telling.
As the battle between the exorcists and Akuma continues around Allen, he
discovers that his deformity is in actual fact a blessing from the
divine and just like the exorcists use this substance called "innocence"
to defeat the demons, Allen is now part of this legacy. Through some
magical nature, the shard inside Allen causes it to be transformed into
a deadly weapon that allows him to battle the Akuma.
Finally, we have a dark priest named Cross Marian who takes Allen under
his wing's in order to groom him to become a Black Priest, the exorcists
and from there, this never ending battle begins. Joined by a group of
other exorcists, Allen is on a journey to stop the Millennium Early from
raising an army in order to recreate Noah's great flood and vanquish
humanity once and for all.
The characters in the series are quite relatable and distinct from each
other, even though at times the series is quite stereotypical of this
genre. Apart from action, the series has some romance between Allen
Walker and Li, one of his companions and a healthy amount of drama,
intrigue and mystery.
To compliment the wonderfully diverse and rich storyline, the animation
of the series is quite dark and vibrant at times which features some
impressive battle scenes and special effects. The contrast is almost
like hell and heaven. I do commend the artists in this series as at
times it's almost like a painting come to life.
In conclusion, the series is well plotted and scripted that features
some wonderful diverse characters and a storyline that draws you from
the very first moments of this series. Complimented with some impressive
animation, this is the perfect series to keep you entertained. Highly
