Bystanders comes to the Eastern Eye series of DVDs and it certainly
lives up to the rest of the collection in this brilliant series put
out by Madman of the best in Asian Cinema. Hailing from Korea,
Bystanders stars the lovely Yunjin Kim who some of you might know
from the TV series Lost.
What the show is about is a look into the mind of a serial killer
and the quest of detectives to unravel clues and find him before he
can strike again. A number of students have been found dead and the
suspicion is that they have committed suicide. An autopsy reveals
that this is not the case when a page from a diary is found in a
capsule. It’s then that the hunt for the killer begins in earnest
and the cop played by Kim, needs to explore the past to figure out
what might happen in the future.
This is part thriller and part morality play, the film is true to
how society views females and their place in Korea and sometimes our
heroine oversteps the mark which of course rankles the other police
but makes for some interesting moments for us.
This film contains a making of which goes in some part to show
exactly what the motivations behind the film were and also of course
the processes were that make this flick so enjoyable. Some of the
over the top acting may annoy some viewers but for the most part
this is one good DVD that should not be overlooked by fans of Asian
Cinema.
