Based on a true story, A Mighty Heart follows the story of Wall
Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl who travelled to Karachi with
his pregnant wife Mariane, in pursuit of the truth. He was
investigating a possible tie between “shoe bomber” Richard Reid and
Sheikh Gilani, a Pakistani cleric who dabbled with radical Islamic
groups in the past.
Unfortunately for Pearl, he was kidnapped and brutally murdered
after being abducted by jihadists to to force the U.S. government to
dictate on their terms which never happened. This interpretation of
events follows the the five weeks leading up to Pearl's death and
revolves around his wife Mariane and how she and the various
governments of the world handled the situation. It is also based on
the memoir she wrote of the experience in hopes that her son Adam,
could get a feel for the great man his father was and how much
people cared about him.
The movie has an almost documentary style of filmmaking behind it
which keeps the tension and emotions high and is an extremely
powerful piece of filmmaking, especially by Angelia Jolie herself
who is remarkable as Mariane. She is almost barely unrecognizable as
the sex siren that the media portrays and is easily her best
performance to date. A Gripping movie directed by
Michael Winterbottom with stellar acting performances.
