DUNGEONS & DRAGONS The Twenty-Sided Tavern

Sydney – Tuesday 3 September 2024. Adventure awaits this summer as DUNGEONS & DRAGONS The Twenty-Sided Tavern makes its Australasian premiere at the Sydney Opera House.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS The Twenty-Sided Tavern is an interactive, one-of-a-kind celebration of the World’s Greatest Roleplaying Game® (RPG), under license by Hasbro and its Wizards of the Coast division, and brought to life by producers David Carpenter and Showpath Entertainment. Created by David CarpenterSarah Davis Reynolds and David Andrew Laws, the experience is currently running off-Broadway in New York city and will start a US tour in 2025.

With a cast of five actors and over 30 playable characters, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS The Twenty-Sided Tavern offers an expansive fantasy world where the audience is a crucial player – controlling which direction the story takes, choosing the characters, the experiences and more via Gamiotics software. Bringing the tavern and the world of the Forgotten Realms to life with 34 backgrounds, over 40 custom character illustrations, 28 combat effects, 40 item cards and well over 300 individual pieces of content, the story is ever-changing, offering countless ways for the adventure to play out – and ensuring every performance is unique.

Co-creator and Producer, David Carpenter says: “As passionate gamers and D&D players, the creators of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS The Twenty-Sided Tavern set off on a quest to explore what a live interactive experience of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS could look like. What started as a D&D-style RPG onstage with folding tables and a box of props has grown beyond our wildest imagination – it’s now an experience that has allowed us to forge a deep connection with gamers and non-gamers alike, with each night seeing the story play out in a way unique to that audience.”

Created for novices and fans alike, opportunities to join the action in DUNGEONS & DRAGONS The Twenty-Sided Tavern will test the audience’s strength and challenge their charisma through combat, puzzles, riddles or games. These moments showcase the sense of community and camaraderie that the original DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game has offered players around the world for the past 50 years.

The Path Entertainment Group CEO, David Hutchinson says: “It has been incredibly rewarding to witness fans, novices and theatre-goers engage with the rich world of Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast’s DUNGEONS & DRAGONS brought to life by David Carpenter and Path Entertainment. Bringing game-led socialising experiences to the stage in unique ways is at the heart of our work, and we can’t wait to see how Opera House audiences embrace the interactive nature of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS The Twenty-Sided Tavern this summer.”

Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Performance, Ebony Bott says: “DUNGEONS & DRAGONS has an enduring and near-mythic appeal across generations, with so many adaptations and features in pop-culture moments over the past 50 years. But it’s safe to say, no one has done anything like DUNGEONS & DRAGONS The Twenty-Sided Tavern before – and we’re thrilled to be giving audiences the first chance to see it outside the US. This theatrical production captures the imagination, inviting everyone to join the adventure and interact with a new world from the moment they walk in the door.”

In a quest unlike any other, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS The Twenty-Sided Tavern is Australia’s exclusive opportunity to gather a party, choose the adventure and become the hero this summer.
