Venue: Palais Theatre St Kilda
Length: 2-hours
Show: Tribute

Although Dire Straits have disbanded, their legacy and music lives on which makes them one of the greatest rock bands of modern music. Thankfully there is still a way to feel their live music thanks to original band member Chris White and six world class musicians who create the penultimate tour with The Dire Straits Experience that is currently touring Australia. We had the chance to see this amazing band at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda and needless to say, it was a true rock experience!

Even though Mark Knopfler is absent, Chris White is joined by guitarist extraordinaire Terence Reis who were the founding members of The Straits in 2011 who performed at a sold-out charity at Royal Albert Hall in England to mass hysteria. As a result, these great artists have composed a truly first class band that include Richard Cottle (keyboards), Ralph Salmins (drums), Mick Feat (bass) and Paddy Milner (keyboards) that together really channel the spirit and harmony of the original band.

From the very first song of The Dire Straits Experience, you’ll be taken back on an amazing musical journey of Dire Straits as they perform some of their greatest hits that include Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, So Far Away, Brothers in Arms, Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, Tunnel of Love, Telegraph Road, Private Investigations, Twisting By the Pool plus many more. The music played by this band was truly a “wow” moment and felt even better than a concert due to the size of the Palais Theatre.

With that said, the atmosphere at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda Australia was electric and you could literally feel the energy from both the band and the sell-out crowd as these legendary songs were played. Apart from the extraordinary music that flowed through your body, what I really enjoyed about The Dire Straits Experience was the comradery between the band members that didn’t feel forced or put together in an adhoc fashion but rather, they were creating something special as they played their instruments like true rock gods.

It was also quite astonishing to watch Terence Reis on his myriad of guitars as he belted out these Dire Straits classics, not to mention his amazing fine-tuned vocals and although he sounds different than Mark Knopfler, he is just as good in our books. I also loved the passion of Chris White whose showmanship was quite infectious, especially when he played the saxophone, flute and other instruments who is definitely not slowing down to age. Saxophone forever Chris!

Final Thoughts?

If you’re a fan of modern rock, especially Dire Straits than we thoroughly recommend The Dire Straits Experience which is more than just a tribute band. Together, these musicians create a truly unique rendition of Dire Straits that really touches your musical core and even though it was a 2-hour show, the band came back for a few more songs after they finished.

Kudos to Chris White, Terence Reis and the entire band because you guys really nailed it!
