Smart plugs!
This very clever “smart” device from D-Link is a wall adapter that allows you to control your appliances or devices from anywhere in the world, including automatic scheduling and being able to turn these devices on and off remotely. Furthermore, whatever device is attached to the D-Link Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plug can be monitored thanks to push notifications, controlled by voice activated commands (e.g. Alexa) and best of all it has a compact design with a relatively small physical footprint which would not look out of place in the home or office.
Features
- Wireless 802.11n
- Mydlink app support
- Power scheduling
- Smart remote power control
- Automation
- Cable free installation
- FOTA (firmware upgrade over the air)
- Google Assistant / Alexa / IFTTT support
Well-packed from D-Link the first thing that we noticed about the D-Link Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plug was the compact design of this product with a size of just 58 x 58 x 44mm and a weight of just 122 grams. In essence, it looks like a double adapter, albeit slightly larger and with only one connection. It also has a power button on the top, including an LED (top right hand corner) which informs you if the device if powered or not.
The other additional feature of this device is the setup process and we had the D-Link Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plug up and running in just a few minutes. The first step is to connect the smart plug to your mains power socket and then download the free mydlink app onto your mobile device. This then allows you to setup the smart plug to your network, including the ability to set-up notifications, scheduling and more importantly controlling the D-Link Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plug remotely.
We tested the D-Link Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plug with a variety of devices that included our notebook which automatically booted once it detected a power signal and even our kettle so we had hot water available for a coffee when we returned home. For scheduling, we connected a lamp located in our lounge room and our TV and when 12:00am came, both these devices powered off. It’s also great that you can turn these device on /off through voice commands with Alexa or Google and with Christmas just around the corner, this smart plug is perfect for controlling your Christmas tree lights!
Final Thoughts?
The D-Link Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plug (DSP-W118) is a great little device from this company which increases the scope and control of whatever device or appliance is connected to it. Needless to say, it is a great feeling coming home with the lamp turned on which makes it feel more homely. It’s also great for people who forget to turn appliances off like irons and hair straighteners. So if you’re looking to add some smarts to your devices at home, the D-Link Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plug may be just that product!
