For our testing of these new Cricut materials, we received some Everyday Iron-on and vinyl samples to check out and like other Cricut products, there is a methodology behind getting your designs onto the irons and vinyls.
For the iron-ons, the first step for Circuit gurus is of course using the Cricut design space software which is used to create your designs and once done, using your Cricut smart cutting machine to transfer your creations to the intended destinations. After you have “printed” your designs, you need to use cutting mat to weed out your design and the optional Iron-On protective sheet.
It always helps to wash your fabric materials without softener that basically removes any chemicals which may hamper the adhesion process. If you are using an iron, you also need to ensure that you are not using the steam setting as I’ve accidentally messed up a few transfers in the past. Of course, the Cricut Heat app for Cricut EasyPress 3 and Cricut Hat Press is a much better option as it provides a step by step guide. Additionally Cricut have an excellent heat guide available on their website and once done, it’s best to leave the fabric for 24-hours to ensure after time for adhesion.
For vinyl transfers, you need to use the transfer tape that firmly attaches the designs to your intended surface and best of all, if you follow the steps properly, it offers a water proof creation. Once you have “cut” your design for the vinyl materials, you need to remove the negative pieces of your image with the weeder and when you have completed this step, you then need to place the transfer tape on your design and use the craft stick (or scraper) to rub the tape onto the vinyl.
Following this is, you add the vinyl to the surface and then carefully remove the transfer tape by burnishing it or rubbing. And presto, welcome to your new permanent vinyl design. While it may seem a little intimidating, it’s actually quite straight forward and the most challenging aspect is using the weeder but again, practice makes perfect and it’s always best to start with simpler designs.
Final thoughts?
Once again, Cricut expand the scope of these amazing smart cutting machines and if you’re familiar with the various accessories for this machine, you should have no issues with their new-range.
