Unboxing

The following were not part of the bundle …

In terms of dimensions, the Cricut Maker 4 measures 56.1 cm x 18 cm x 15.7 cm, with a relatively substantial weight of 6.98 kilograms. The maximum cutting size using the machine mat is 29.2 cm x 59.6 cm, while the maximum cut size using Smart Materials is 29.7 cm x 3.6 m. Lastly, it supports a cut speed of up to 14.1 ips. That said, the build quality is robust, with a sturdy frame that minimizes vibrations during operation, contributing to its precision and reliability.

One of the standout features of the Maker 4 is that it is twice as fast as the Maker 3, making it ideal for high-volume projects. The machine is equipped with advanced cutting technology that ensures precision, whether you’re working on intricate designs or large-scale projects. It can handle a wide range of materials, including paper, vinyl, fabric, leather, wood, and even aluminum, making it one of the most versatile crafting machines on the market. The enhanced motor and cutting mechanism allow for smoother and more accurate cuts, reducing the likelihood of errors and material wastage.

The Maker 4 is designed with both beginners and experienced crafters in mind. The setup process is straightforward, with clear instructions provided in the box and online. You basically go the Cricut website, create an account and then download the Design Space App for either your computer (USB) or smart device (Bluetooth). This will then connect to your Maker 4 and presto, you’re ready to create!

The Cricut Design Space software, while powerful, has a learning curve and is a little clunky, which might require some patience to navigate. However, the software is regularly updated, and the online community offers a wealth of tutorials and support to help users get the most out of their machine. However, it’s well worth the time investment to master the software.

Consumables

The Maker 4 can cut over 300 types of materials, from delicate fabrics to tough materials like balsa wood and aluminum. This extensive compatibility makes it suitable for a wide range of projects, from simple paper crafts to complex, multi-material creations. It also supports a wide range of tools, including blades for cutting, pens for drawing, and scoring tools for folding. The adaptive tool system allows for quick and easy tool changes, enhancing the machine’s versatility.

Further, the machine is compatible with Cricut’s Smart Materials, which allow for matless cutting and longer cuts, up to 12 feet in length. This feature is particularly useful for large projects and saves time by eliminating the need to repeatedly load and unload materials. Although this machine does everything that the Cricut 3 does at $549 AUD, owners of the Cricut 3 might not justify spending the additional money on a faster machine (with a nicer color), unless that’s a priority. However, if you’re looking to jump into the world of smart cutters, then the Cricut Maker 4 is the machine I would happily recommend and the slight price jump from the Cricut 3.

Final Thoughts

The Cricut Maker 4 is a powerful and versatile tool that caters to a wide range of crafting needs. Its speed and precision make it a valuable asset for both hobbyists and professionals. While it doesn’t revolutionize the crafting experience compared to the Maker 3, its enhancements in speed and material compatibility make it a worthy investment for those looking to elevate their crafting projects. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just starting out, the Maker 4 offers the tools and capabilities to bring your creative visions to life.

The Cricut Maker 4 is available in Australia and sold exclusively at Harvey Norman AU, Spotlight AU, and Spotlight NZ, with a recommended retail price (RRP) of $699 AUD or $799 NZD and comes with a 1-year warranty.

Oh, and the Cricut is pronounced like the word “cricket,” not “cry-cut”!
