Summary: The Canon EOS 200D is the perfect camera for those wanting to make the transition to a smaller DSLR!

4.7

A smaller DSLR

The EOS 200D is Canon’s new compact digital SLR that comes with a wealth of features and more importantly, produces some stunning photos and videos, ideal for budding photographers from beginners to amateurs alike. Given its size, lightweight design, accessible features, interesting filters and great presets, this is where the Canon EOS 200D shines and is a great place to start if you’re looking for far superior photos than your standard smartphone camera. The camera bundle kit comes with a standard compact zoom lens (18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM) and it’s compatible with other lenses from Canon and accessories.

Technical Specifications

  • Sensor: 24.2 megapixel APS-C CMOS
  • Processor:  DIGIC 7
  • ISO Range: 100-25600 (expandable to 51200)
  • Video: Full HD at 60p
  • Screen: 3-inch, Clear View II TFT, 1040k-dot, vari-angle touchscreen
  • Viewfinder: Optical pentamirror, 95% coverage
  • Autofocus: 9-point AF
  • Shutter speeds: 30 sec – 1/4000, Bulb.
  • Burst rate: 5fps
  • Weight: 453g (including battery and memory card)
  • Dimensions: 122.4 x 92.6 x 69.8mm

At 24 megapixels, the EOS 200D comes with a DIGIC 7 Processor, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, 9 auto-focus point and a 63-zone metering sensor which definitely makes capturing images a joy with its auto-focus capabilities. Add in an ISO range of 100 to 25,600 and amateur photographers will have all the tools needed to tweak this camera to achieve their desired shots. Furthermore, it comes with a very clear and responsive high resolution touch screen with excellent live-viewing that has the ability to rotate the screen which even closes into the camera to protect the screen. Oh… the screen even feels like a smart phone thanks to its swipe feature! Kudos for Canon for making the touch screen capabilities of the EOS 200D not only intuitive to use but it offers some great functionality to the end user.

Thanks to the DIGIC 7 Processor, the camera has the ability of taking some great fast moving photos, including the ability of 5 frames-per-second (fps) continuous shooting. Although it does not support 4K recording, the EOS 200D offers 1080p FULL HD from 24 fps to a very smooth 60 fps. For connectivity, the camera supports Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi connections to and from the camera. For those wanting to add GPS tags to your images, this can be setup via Bluetooth to another device which includes the latitude, longitude and location time.

Out of the box, the first thing that we noticed was the professional build of the camera made from polycarbonate resin and carbon that has a small body which is 122.4 x 92.6 x 69.8mm with a weight of just 453 grams. So not only is it quite lightweight but accessing the controls feels quite natural and overall it is a very comfortable camera to use. Accessing the camera can be done a variety of ways from the built-in controls on the EOS 200D to touch screen or the controls on the body of the camera. Another highlight of the design was its grip which felt really good in the hand and added to the overall control and design of the EOS 200D.

As mentioned, the camera is great for beginners or people with limited DSLR experience, especially with its Scene Intelligent Auto feature which basically automatically picks the best settings for the user. This is basically a point and shoot feature for a particular shot but it changes the settings such as low-light or how far the subject is. Other self-set settings, include;

  • Portrait
  • Group Photo
  • Landscape
  • Sports
  • Kids
  • Macro
  • Food
  • Candlelight
  • Night Portrait
  • Handheld Night Scene
  • HDR Backlight Control

Further to this is the Creative Auto mode that allows you to slightly tweak the Scene Intelligent Auto settings. We also found the inbuilt filters of the EOS 200D such as Soft Focus and Miniature Effect were quite fun to use and created some very clever images. The EOS 200D allows users to take photos via the LCD or through the electronic viewfinder which we found very clear and although the camera did take some decent low-light shots, the in-built flash comes in handy if you need additional light.

Just be careful as the viewfinder only captures 95% of what you are actually seeing… and although we didn’t find this an issue, if something else came into the image, that’s what Photoshop and other video editing programs are for. With that said, image quality can be changed from JPEG to RAW and we found that even using the highest quality setting with RAW, the EOS 200D had no issues writing this information to our memory card.

Noise did occur in low light and when you adjust the ISO. Thankfully colours were very bright and vibrant, especially taking photos outdoors. The camera had some excellent auto-focus features which allowed us to capture the image with relative ease, even with moving subjects. Those wanting additional control can swap to manual and with some tweaking achieve their intended shot. However we found the AF technology used on this camera very good and it’s great that Canon continue refining this technology.

Review Gallery

Those wanting to take video will be pleased by Full HD (1920 x 1080) video at a very smooth 60 fps, although other speeds were available at 50, 30, 25 and 24. Add in a stereo jack on the camera body and this allows you to connect an external microphone to improve your audio quality. Video was good in most conditions and we do recommend a fast memory card if you want to record video. For those traveling, the camera does capture around 650 frames through its electronic view finder, however if you use the LCD or video, this will decrease the battery life. We actually  forgot to turn off the camera on numerous occasions and the EOS 200D just powers down which is great for maximising its battery.

Final Thoughts?

The Canon EOS 200D provides some outstanding value for money with a plethora of exciting features, brilliant images and a camera that can be used by everyone. Sure, the lack of 4K may deter some users but for the most part, it is a very easy to use DSLR which is more about the photos than the video. Nonetheless, the FULL HD video is still exceptionally clear and all in all, the Canon EOS 200D targets a great market at an excellent price! So if you’re in the need of a new camera, I would put this on your radar!
