The three part Manga story of Kentaro Miura’s continues on Blu-ray and DVD with The Battle for Doldrey which sees the Hawks in the middle of a huge battle between the Midlands and Chuder. As a result, Griffith and the Hawks capture a key strategic castle in the war with the Castle of Doldrey which sparks one of the most violent battles of this war and needless to say, this is probably one of the most goriest animes to date with body parts, blood and innards flying across the screen. This is highlighted even more thanks to the amazing use of CGI in this story which almost makes the violence appear quite surreal and even 3D at times. It’s almost like the movie 300 as Griffith takes five thousand men to take on 30,000.
There’s also some great characterisation in this story, especially betwen Guts and Griffith, the two main protagonist in the series that also becomes the catalyst for the next film as Guts leaves the Band of Hawks. As a result, Griffith seduces Princess Charlotte of the Midlands which calls upon the fury of the king who unleashes his full hatred towards him and the Hawks.
There’s also a great moment between Guts and Casca that without spoiling the film changes the direction that these two characters will take. Given the violence in Berserk The Golden Age Arc II The Battle for Doldrey, there is quite a large amount of drama which is filled with politically intrigue from both sides of the Chuder and the Midlands. It’s the drama and the intensity that helps keep the film together and creates a thoroughly enjoyable Blu-ray.
On Blu-ray, Berserk The Golden Age Arc II The Battle for Doldrey really shines, especially the use of 3D CGI to help portray the deadly battles. Filled with gore and blood, this is definitely up there on the violence scale but it actually suits the story perfectly. Animation is crystal clear, colours vibrant, especially red and all in all, the audio (Dolby Digital 5.1), the video and story comes together perfectly.
Great pacing and great action, Berserk The Golden Age Arc II The Battle for Doldrey is a must have anime for your collection, especially for lovers of Blu-ray.
