Alice in Wonderland Live Review
Adapted and directed by Penny Farrow, designed and co-directed by Nate Bertone, and executively produced by Ethan Walker, “Alive in Wonderland” returns us to the magical world created by the legendary Lewis Carroll. This new adaptation is both familiar and refreshingly different, offering yet another fantastical adventure.
‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
From a set perspective, “Alice in Wonderland” is flawless, with larger-than-life sets, vibrant colors, intricate costumes, and captivating puppets that immediately draw you into this theatrical performance. The prerecorded music is equally powerful, setting the scene as we follow young Alice down the rabbit hole. Éowyn Turner stars as Alice, and her classical training in ballet, jazz, and acrobatics shines through in her performance.
The whimsical cast of “Alice in Wonderland” includes Lucy Fox (White Rabbit), Simon Burvell-Holmes (Queen of Hearts, Cheshire Cat), who was my favorite, Sharnema Nougar (Mad Hatter), Anthony Craig (Caterpillar & Dormouse), Oliver Palamara (March Hare), Justine Anderson (Tweedle Dum), and Matilda Simmons (Tweedle Dee). They come together perfectly as the denizens of Wonderland. The puppets, especially Dormouse and the briefly seen Cheshire Cat with its eerie glowing teeth, are faultless.
While the performance pays perfect homage to the original story, it also incorporates social commentary and plenty of humor to engage both young and old in this timeless tale. If you love live theatre based on the classics, “Alice in Wonderland” delivers a magical and amusing experience from start to finish. Catch it at the Athenaeum Theatre for a strictly limited performance.
