Prison Break

A Way Out was originally released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2018 but today we’re checking it out on the PlayStation 5 and even today, it offers a unique and engaging cooperative experience that feels remarkably fresh even years later. The story follows Leo and Vincent, two convicts with distinct personalities and motivations, as they break out of prison and navigate the challenges of life on the run. Their journey is filled with tense moments, unexpected twists, and surprisingly poignant character development, making for a compelling story that’s as much about their evolving relationship as it is about their escape.

Gameplay in A Way Out is where the game truly shines, particularly from a cooperative design as it presents players with a diverse range of gameplay scenarios that require genuine teamwork. One moment you might be coordinating a prison break, with one player creating a diversion while the other retrieves a crucial tool that at times is reminiscent of the TV show, Prison Break. Alternatively, you’re engaging in a high-speed chase, with players sharing responsibilities for driving, navigating and dealing with pursuers which really starts your adrenaline levels pumping.

These scenarios are not just simple button-mashing exercises; they often require strategic thinking, precise timing, and clear communication to succeed. From stealth sections and puzzle-solving to action-packed shootouts and even quieter moments of interaction, A Way Out offers a consistently varied and exciting gameplay experience. The forced cooperation can sometimes lead to hilarious mishaps and arguments with your co-op partner, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience. So yes, the gameplay can be tough if you don’t work together and this is where A Way Out shines its way to freedom. The game can also be played via split-screen (the best option) or online, including a “Friend Pass” that allows a friend to join even if they don’t own the game.

Graphics & Audio

While the core art style remains the same, the game feels smoother on the PS5. The environments, ranging from the gritty confines of prison to the sprawling landscapes of the outside world, are richly detailed and atmospheric, contributing to the game’s immersive quality. Character models are expressive, conveying the emotions and personalities of Leo and Vincent effectively.

The audio design in A Way Out is equally impressive, playing a crucial role in setting the mood and enhancing the tension. The soundtrack is dynamic, adapting to the on-screen action and seamlessly transitioning between moments of quiet reflection and high-stakes drama. Sound effects are crisp and impactful, from the clang of prison doors to the roar of a car engine, adding weight and realism to the game world. Voice acting is also commendable, with both actors delivering convincing performances that bring Leo and Vincent to life. The game’s audio design effectively complements the visuals and gameplay, creating a cohesive and immersive experience that draws players deeper into the narrative.

Final Thoughts?

A Way Out remains a unique and thoroughly enjoyable cooperative experience on the PlayStation 5. Its innovative gameplay mechanics, compelling narrative, and enhanced visuals and audio make it a must-play for anyone looking for a truly collaborative gaming experience. The game’s focus on teamwork and communication makes it a fantastic choice for friends or family members looking to share a memorable gaming experience. If you’re seeking something different from the typical single-player or competitive multiplayer games, A Way Out offers a refreshing and rewarding alternative.
