Australians Forced to Use VPNs to Watch Game of Thrones
Australian streaming services have been notorious for being pricier, less reliable, and offering fewer options than services available in other countries.
For example, Foxtel’s streaming services crashed on the day when Season 7 of Game of Thrones was released – Foxtel being the only platform for Australians to watch the show legally.
Other streaming services in Australia, such as Netflix, are known to offer fewer choices and to be more expensive than in other countries.
“NordVPN, which stands for Internet freedom, gives the opportunity to users in one country to connect to a server in another country, so they can have more streaming choices,” said Marty P. Kamden, CMO of NordVPN. “We believe this is what happened with the premiere of Game of Thrones Season 7 – Australian users got frustrated with the local provider and looked for other options to connect and watch the show. Perhaps some connected directly to American HBO for streaming. In any case, we have noticed a significant growth of users from Australia in the past week – yesterday, for example, we had 83% more users from Australia, compared to same day last week.”
Geo-unblocking is a function of a VPN that allows to easily jump between countries with a click of a button to access websites that are geo-blocked. VPNs also encrypt all traffic between a user’s computer and a VPN server, providing privacy and security in their Internet browsing experience.
NordVPN has recently added a CyberSec feature that turns on every time a user switches the VPN on, and protects from malware, annoying ads and phishing attempts. It checks each website the user tries to access against a list of malicious sites. Any site included in the phishing blacklist is blocked before any harm can be done.
