Don Jon is the delightful comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt that stars the aforementioned actor as Jon Martello who has been given the nickname of Don Jon by his friends due to his uncanny ability to almost pickup any women that he desires. However for Jon who not only happens to have charisma but also looks is unfortunately addicted to internet pornography. Although Jon can literally have his pick of beautiful women in his city, he cannot get enough of porn and believes that all his pleasures can be given in these bite sized chunks.
Early on in the movie, Jon quite eloquently explains why pornography is far superior than real sex, noting that every vagina could be dangerous and that money shots do not exist in real-life. However on one of his outings with his two friends, Jon finds the girl of his dreams (Scarlett Johansson) in a nightclub and when he tries a little too hard to bed her, he fails miserably but vows to continue the chase.
Eventually when the two hook up, he goes through what he believes the rigmoral of dating and even forces himself to attend romantic movies with Barbara (Johansson). Barbara who believes in the clichéd Hollywood romances falls for Jon but when she catches him masturbating to porn, this causes a huge ripple through their relationship. Jon argues that porn is normal and that romantic movies are porn to women.
Nonetheless things don’t go according to plan for our hapless lover which creates this delightful and extremely witty comedy about the pitfalls of modern society, internet porn addiction and real-world romance. Apart from Gordon-Levitt and Johansson who are brilliant as their characters, the film also has some great supporting cast that include Tony Danza as his father, Julianne Moore as his classmate plus Rob Brown and Jeremy Luke as his best friends.
Very Fun!
