Saskia Archer Interview – Australian Rising Star Set to Shine in Shane Black’s “Play Dirty”

We catch up with Australian actor Saskia Archer to talk about the how, the now and the future of her acting roles.

Welcome to Impulse Gamer Saskia! So firstly, what inspired you to pursue acting and what has shaped your journey?

Actually, acting wasn’t a plan; I was pulled into it after a friend dragged me to an audition whilst I was studying to be a paramedic. The chance to explore different human experiences and the ‘no regrets’ philosophy really shaped my path. I decided to dive in and see what the world of acting had to offer, I’ve been riding the wave ever since.

What was it like being cast in Shane Black’s Play Dirty? Do you feel like this is a pivotal and game changing moment in your career?

I cant talk much about it but being cast in said movie felt surreal. My team saw it as a great opportunity. Shane Black’s was a joy to work with and collaborating on such a large-scale international project was a fantastic and exciting step.

What has it been like making the progression from Australian films to Hollywood? What do you think is the biggest difference between the two industries is?

The progression to working on US projects has exposed me to grander productions and a global network, which differs notably from the tighter-knit, often more familiar atmosphere of the Australian film scene.

You’ve worked on a variety of projects from thrillers to dramas. What genre do you feel like you connect with the most?

While thrillers have their own intensity, I find myself most deeply connected to drama. There’s a unique satisfaction in exploring the nuances of complex characters in an uncensored medium. The raw emotions at the heart of dramatic narratives allow me to truly explore the human condition and connect with audiences deeply.

What on-set moment has been your greatest lesson?

Excuse my candor, but the ‘leave your baggage at the door’ acting advice? Bullshit. To deny that you’re a fully-fledged, complex human, and to pretend you’re not in order to do a scene seems counter-intuitive. My greatest on-set moment came when I finally allowed my full self to be present in all my flaws, complexities, and humanity. Which is a lot harder than it might sound. The scene I’m talking about is at 35:36 on the clock of The Reef: Stalked. When I allowed my terror, grief, fear, doubt, denial, disbelief, and desperation to all be present at once. The lesson? Bring your whole self to the scene and stop denying the complexity of the character you’re playing.

The Australian film industry is thriving. How do you see your role in contributing to its growth and global recognition?

It is, Australian filmmakers are incredibly talented. I’m continuously impressed by some of the work that I see. Where I can, I’d like to contribute to the gap between Australian narratives and global themes. By participating in projects that explore universal issues through a distinctly Australian lens, I hope to support our stories becoming more accessible and compelling to international audiences, thereby contributing to the industry’s global footprint.

As a rising star, you’re becoming a role model for aspiring actors. What advice would you give to those looking to follow in your footsteps?

I don’t know if I am qualified to answer this directly but if I can give my honest uncensored answer. I would say get clear on why you want to be an actor. If it’s for fame, perhaps ask yourself why that’s important to you. If it’s for art, then make art.

Outside of acting, what are some passions or hobbies that keep you grounded?

Reading, writing, spending time at MOMA or any type of art gallery with a coffee in my hand. But if I need to work through something I’ll head to the gym.

If James Gunn (Warner Bros / DC) or the Russo Brothers (Marvel) approached you to play a hero in their universe, who would you choose and why?

I’d have to say Black Canary of DC interests me the most, I relate to the slash of darkness amidst a cool controlled exterior. Seems like a fun one to play. Of the Marvel Universe’s, I’d go with Angela (Guardians of the Galaxy) or Star Sapphire. Both seem wild.

Finally, what’s next for you after Play Dirty? Any exciting projects or dreams you’re chasing?

I’m currently working on an unnamed project I can’t talk too much about. But I can tell you it’s a drama romance, and the story is very sweet and a lot of fun. I’m really enjoying the process, as it’s quite different from work I’ve done before. I’ll make sure to update online when I have more I’m allowed to share.
