99% wireless freedom

Logitech’s Powerplay technology has always been a fascinating concept and it provides a truly wireless gaming experience for your mouse, free from the dreaded “low battery” notification. There are however a couple of caveats at play here that include a permanent USB connection for the mat (understandably) and of course a compatible mouse. With that said, Logitech aims to refine this experience with their Powerplay 2, and for the most part, they’ve succeeded. However, as with any iteration, there are some nuances to consider.

At its heart, the Powerplay 2 retains the core function of its predecessor that is providing continuous wireless charging to compatible Logitech G mice. This is achieved through an electromagnetic field generated by the mousepad, which is then converted into power by the included charging module (the “Powercore”). The promise is simple, never plug your mouse in again and in practice, it delivers its main selling point for unlimited power.

Compared to its predecessor, Logitech has managed to slim down the Powerplay 2, resulting in a sleeker profile. This is a welcome change, as it sits more flush with your desk, enhancing overall ergonomics and minimising its aesthetics as it looks more like a large mouse pad. Furthermore, Logitech states that they have increased the charging area, making it more efficient at powering the mouse which is a welcome improvement.

Given this luxury of never charging a wireless mouse again, the Powerplay 2 retails for $199AUD (March 2025) which could be considered out of the price range for some. Additionally, compatibility is key and you need to have a compatible Logitech G wireless mouse and they have included a full list at https://www.logitechg.com/en-au/products/gaming-mouse-pads/powerplay-2.947-000004.html

At present, the Powerplay 2 supports the Logitech G309, G502 X PLUS, G502 X LIGHTSPEED, G502, G703, G903, PRO X SUPERLIGHT 2, PRO X SUPERLIGHT 2 DEX, PRO X SUPERLIGHT, PRO 2 LIGHTSPEED, and PRO Wireless. So with the price of the Powerplay 2, you then have the cost of the mouse, unless you already own one of these products. It also incorporates Logitech’s Lightspeed wireless technology for a “lighting” fast connection.

Unboxing

Well packaged from Logitech the Powerplay 2 feels like a well-designed and sturdy product that is powered by USB-C cable. The pad measures at 344mm x 284mm with a thickness of 1.3mm (mouse pad) plus the Powerplay 2 base (2.2mm) that gives a total surface height of 3.5mm. Additionally the Powerplay 2 control module is 10.5mm. You also have the choice of both cloth and hard gaming mouse pads.

Further, setting up the Powerplay 2 and your compatible mouse is a breeze and once setup, you’re pretty much ready to go and explore those gaming worlds. So how does your mouse get charged, this is done through a “coin” which is placed inside the compatible device that then powers the mouse itself. It’s quite a clever system and for lovers of RGB, it supports Logitech’s Lightsync RGB lighting technology.

Using the Powerplay 2 for the last few weeks, the mouse pad has a very smooth surface that does help with the movement of your mouse. Whether I was playing first person shooters, modifying images in Adobe Photoshop or taking on the next boss in Diablo, I had no qualms whatsoever. More so, the ability of a fully charged wireless mouse is a huge game changer, especially with wireless gaming mice.

Final Thoughts?

For the hardcore gamer, the Powerplay 2 offers a compelling proposition. The freedom from charging cables is undeniable and the refined design is a step in the right direction. However, the value proposition hinges heavily on your existing Logitech G ecosystem but if you loathe charging your wireless mouse, the Powerplay 2 with the right accessory may be the perfect option for you.
