Summary: The Star Wars Unlimited: Twilight of the Republic starter kit is everything you need to battle it out in a galaxy far far away!

4.5

Great start!

With the popularity of Star Wars Unlimited, we thought it was time for Impulse Gamer to check out this card series based in a galaxy far, far away. Although I’m a little apprehensive with card games because they can either be a miss (like a stormtrooper firing at a rebel) or a hit (like Luke Skywalker in his X-wing taking that one-in-a-million shot), thankfully, Star Wars Unlimited is the latter. This deck-building game is not only super easy to play but also super enjoyable.

Further, this is the third set in the series, with the current release (Twilight of the Republic) focusing on the Clone Wars. The ‘pack’ leaders are Ahsoka Tano and General Grievous who add a unique twist into how they play. Ahsoka has a boost when she is in charge of three units via the Coordinate keyword, which allows her to perform an additional attack with one of her units. Then you have General Grievous, the leader of the Separatists, that like Ahsoka, he also has access to another attack boost.

Although it may seem like a rock-paper-scissors approach, there is a considerable amount of strategy in how you play your cards in this set. Another new element is the incorporation of token units such as battle droids for Grievous or clone troopers for Ahsoka, which again add to the overall strategy of this deck-building game.

So how do you play?

1.      Setup: Each player needs a deck, an initiative counter, damage counters, and token cards matching any types created by their decks. Shuffle your deck and draw your starting hand.

2.      Game Structure: The game is played in rounds, with each round consisting of two main phases: the Action Phase and the Regroup Phase.

3.      Action Phase: During this phase, players take turns performing actions such as playing cards, attacking with units, and using abilities. Each player can play one card per turn, and actions are resolved in a specific order.

4.      Regroup Phase: After both players have completed their actions, the Regroup Phase begins. This phase allows players to recover resources, draw cards, and prepare for the next round.

5.      Winning the Game: The game continues until one player’s leader is defeated or a player achieves a specific victory condition, depending on the format being played.

These are the bare basics of Star Wars Unlimited rules.

Where the gameplay truly shines is through the strategy you can use and the various options available in this deck-building game, including all the plethora of cards at your disposal. You basically keep going until a winner is decide.

Although it may sound simple (and the method is), it’s really about how you play those cards and what card is played by your opponent. When you attack, you can either attack a unit or your enemy’s base. Twilight of the Republic also adds 250 new cards, which really enhance this deck-building game.

From a design point of view, the artwork on the cards is fantastic and perfectly mirrors this universe in a galaxy far, far away. The Star Was inspired artwork is visually striking and helps with the overall atmosphere of this game.

Final Thoughts?

If you’re a Star Wars fan and looking for an interactive deck-building game set in everyone’s favourite universe, then Star Wars Unlimited is indeed that droid… err… card game that you’re looking for.

Fun times indeed!
