Fur-Real Love: Couples Make History at a PAX Australia

What’s the spark of true love? For some, it’s a perfect date, kind words, or shared laughter. For others, it’s a video game about a lamb cult leader who sacrifices followers and serves them… bowls of poop? Well, for these two couples, that’s exactly what it was!

PAX Australia, held once a year in Melbourne, Australia, is one of the biggest events in the Australian games calendar. And in a historic PAX first, two couples have tied the knot in a huge Temple straight from indie megahit Cult of the Lamb built specifically for the two rituals, and were overseen by the popular religious leader and cult figure, the Lamb themselves.

The first couple, Tanner and Jasper, were married at 11am, on Sunday October 13th. After meeting through a mutual friend, they eventually met up in Melbourne, and have been together for two years. They are part of the Australian ‘Furry’ community and made their vows while dressed in fursuits especially made for the occasion. Tanner came dressed in his Gryphon outfit, while Jasper complemented him by wearing their Jackalope costume.

The second couple, Shania and Blake, were high school sweethearts and have been together for over 13 years. They exchanged vows in their own wedding at 3pm, the same day. They chose more traditional wedding attire for the ceremony..

Titled ‘Unholy Matrimonies’, both ceremonies were themed on the popular computer game, Cult of the Lamb, a game which holds special meaning for both couples. They were witnessed by thousands of people, who were also attending the popular gaming event, PAX Australia, being held at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

“We felt it would be very fitting to get married by a game that we both enjoy very much and actually helped us to get to know each other in our early part of our relationship,” Tanner stated when asked about why they chose this wedding theme. His partner, Jasper, added, “There isn’t a day we aren’t talking about the wedding and all the amazing people who are doing all this hard work to make this life changing event happen.”

“Shania and I have always had crazy dreams of what our ideal wedding would be like,” Blake commented. “Over the years we’ve come up with countless plans of what we wanted to have. When we saw the opportunity arise on Twitter we thought, what else would be a more ‘us’ way to celebrate our love together!”

Shania added, “For me, I think it would be easier to ask why not? We always wanted to have a big memorable wedding, and over the thirteen years that we’ve been together we could have NEVER thought of something so creative and unique. Everything that the Cult of the Lamb team has done for us has been so incredibly supportive”

Created by local game developers, Massive Monster, and published by Devolver Digital, Cult of the Lamb has become a literal ‘cult-classic’ selling over 3.5 million units worldwide, positioning itself as one of the most successful games to ever be produced in Australia.
