Sarah-Grace Williams Interview (Batman in Concert)

We catch-up with superhero conductor extraordinaire Sarah-Grace Williams to discuss her key role in Batman in Concert. What is Batman in Concert? Batman in Concert is part of a global tour that brings the Warner Bros. Pictures’ 1989 blockbuster film directed by Tim Burton to symphony halls around the globe as part of the DC in Concert series.

Welcome to Impulse Gamer Sarah! Who is your favourite Batman and why?

Michael Keaton of course :) Batman 1989 is my favourite Batman movie of all of them, largely because of Keaton’s portrayal of Batman. I love the look, pacing and acting in the film, but the absolute highlight for me is the incredible score by Danny Elfmann.

The 1989 Batman film holds a special place in the heart of fans, especially the powerful score of Danny Elfman, why do you think this is the case?

Probably a number of things. The gothic visual style was so unique at the time, and Michael Keaton (whose casting was highly criticised when first announced) is now considered by so many to be best Batman of all time. Of course Jack Nicholson is sensational and whilst there have been many different musical scores for the various iterations of Batman over the years, Danny Elfmann’s score is instantly recognisable and regarded as “the” batman theme.

What is your favourite score from Batman 1989 and why?

The opening theme has become iconic and for good reason – the writing is incredible. It is my favourite musical moment from any Batman movie ever.

What are you most looking forward to in bringing this concert experience to Australia?

I absolutely love conducting Film Concerts, marrying the elements of a live orchestra with the screening, especially when the score is as stunning as this one by Danny Elfmann. I think the audience are in for a real treat with this one.

Batman has no super powers but conductors do! How do you magically bring all this music together?

Ha, I love this! I may have to use this quote :)

But there is no magic to what we do, just a lot of preparation! Prior to the rehearsal, I will spend many hours learning the score and studying the version of the film I will see.

The audience sees the film as you know it, but I have a smaller monitor in front of me with a lot of extra information. I have a time code, punchers, streamers, bar counts and more which allow me to ensure the live orchestra perfectly aligns with the film. In addition to studying the score, I watch this several times along with the score, before heading into the rehearsal room with the orchestra.

Tell us a little about the interactive experience?

Every audience member who has ever spoken to me after a Live Film concert comments on how amazing it is to hear, feel and see the orchestra performing live underneath the screen. It adds a dimension that connects in a way that only live music can. It absolutely heightens the experience.

If you could cosplay any Batman character, who would it be and why?

Harley Quinn for sure. I just love her look, it would be so much fun to put together!
