Summary: The Pixel 9 is a jump over its predecessor that also includes almost AI perfection

4.5

AI perfection

Needless to say, fans of the Pixel have been eagerly awaiting the new range and if you’re an avid Android user looking to upgrade or even changing operating system ecosystems, it’s truly the perfect time to switch, particularly with the integration of almost flawless AI – The AI is Gemini which becomes your built-in virtual artificial assistant for day to day tasks, including providing some excellent photo editing features to bring out the best of your photos.

Your new Pixel comes with seven years of OS and security updates, and new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops from launch.

The Review

Compared to the 2023 Pixel 8, its younger sibling, the Pixel 9 has received an upgrade that includes a faster processor (Google Tensor G4), additional RAM (8GB to 12GB), an improved display plus a considerably improved camera system. In Australia, the Pixel 9 retails for $1347AUD (September 2024) for the 128GB model and comes in four groovy colours that include Obsidian (reviewed), Porcelain, Wintergreen and Peony. There’s definitely a colour for everyone!

Although the new Pixel 9’s are shipped with Android 14 (Android 15 coming soon), Google offers an insanely impressive 7 years of updates (Pixel Drops, OS, Security) from launch that still makes this smartphone relevant in 2031. This definitely adds a strong layer of future proofing your investment thanks to its 7 years of support, g so kudos for Google for delivering – the only additional items you need are a phone case plus a tempered glass screen protector just to be safe.

Design-wise, the Pixel 9 is reminiscent of last year’s model with its curved edges and upgraded Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both the front and rear of the smartphone. Sure, some have mentioned the design has some parallels to the iPhone but what sets the Pixel 9 apart is the camera bar on the back which makes holding the phone great.

Aesthetically it’s a good looking phone and feels high-end. On the side is the power button and two for volume control. By holding down the power button it brings up Gemini (the AI assistant) and to turn your phone off, you hold down the power and volume up button.  The phone is also slightly larger than the Pixel 8 and it measures at 152.8 x 72 x 8.5 mm with a weight of 198 grams. But all-in-all, it has a well designed and stylish exterior.

What’s in the box?

  • Pixel 9 handset
  • USB-C to USB-C cable (USB 2.0)
  • SIM tool

Unboxing

Setup of the Pixel 9 (which is super easy) allows you to set the phone as a new device or you can transfer data from your pre-existing Android or Apple phone via wireless connectivity. This includes contacts, messages, photos and even apps and the time to completion is dependent on how much data you are transferring across but as mentioned, a stress free process. Once completed, you’re ready to use your new Google 9!

The Display

The Pixel 9 boasts a fantastic display with super clear text, sharp images and vibrant colours due to the 6.3” Actua OLED display with its resolution of 1080 x 2424. It makes using the Pixel 9 a treat, even in bright sunlight as it supports a peak brightness of 2700 nits. Nits are a unit of measurement that refers to the amount of light that is being emitted by the screen which is needed in direct sunlight. Also, the higher the nit number, the brighter and more colourful images are – as result, no issues in bright environments with the Pixel 9.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the Pixel 9 performs exceptionally well thanks to its new Google Tensor G4 and 12GB of RAM. Using it for day-to-day use, I found no issues with speed whatsoever as all apps loaded quite fast, including streaming and surfing the net. Speaking of fast, the wireless technology of the Pixel 9 is blazingly fast and downloading 3DMark for benchmarking over Wi-Fi 7 was downloaded in no time, including the installation of the app itself.

Apps & AI

The Pixel 9 comes with all the apps you need if you are starting from scratch as a new phone – best of all, it doesn’t come with the bloatware such as other companies offer. On the main screen, you have easy access to the Play Store (Games, Apps), Gmail, Photos, YouTube, Phone, SMS, Chrome and Camera. Some of the other apps include Maps, Drive, Weather, YouTube Music and for newcomers, Pixel Tips that teaches you the ins and outs of this smartphone such as the New Google AI features, Camera, the Essentials, Smart Features and even Pro Tips and Personal Safety. Again, you have everything you need.

Gemini is great, especially if you are time poor – you can ask Gemini to provide summaries from Gmail, create your own custom playlists, find things in screenshots, circle an image and search for information about it online, create the perfect group photo, remove people or objects and even make your own personalized cards. There is also Pixel Weather that helps with precipitation areas and even AI weather reporting. For photography, the Pixel 9 provides a whole wealth of useful AI options to get the most and make the most from your photos.

Say goodbye to unwanted people in your photos…

The ability to use AI to remove people or objects from your photos is quite clever and although this technology is still in its infancy, it’s quite impressive to say the least.

You can also ask Gemini to identify objects and even ask it the best place to buy items

And animals? Sure thing! We don’t know what breed our dog Ruby is but Gemini potentially names her breed as a Potcake. What’s a Potcake? Ask Gemini!

Also being able to use Gemini to summarise web pages or emails is a great time saver! Boring reports? You betcha!

Another clever feature of the new Pixel 9 is its emergency feature – by pressing the power button five times, the smartphone will call emergency services and share your location with contacts. It also has car crash detection as well. Additionally it prevents scams, phishing, malware and blocks spam callers.

.
Battery & Security

What about charging? The Pixel 9 supports fast charging (27W) and for 30-minutes, it will give you a 55% charge. The 4700mAh battery will also get you through a day quite easily with regular use. Further, the smartphone does allow 15W wireless charging plus you can battery share for friends and family. Besides pics and face recognition to unlock (which is super handy for Google Pay), the phone has an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor as well.

Benchmarks

Given the processor of the Pixel 9 and 12GB of RAM, the benchmark results for this smartphone were on the higher end of the scale. I tried 3DMark and Geekbench which provided a nice snapshot on the phones capabilities. 3DMark is a computer benchmarking tool created and developed by UL, to determine the performance of a smartphone’s graphic rendering and CPU workload processing capabilities.

Results? 3DMark confirmed the positioning on the entry level Pixel 9 as a contender with its new Google Tensor G4 sensor. The only thing that the Pixel 9 could not run in 3DMark was the Solar Bay tests which are suited for the top of the range smartphones which heavily focuses on raytracing capabilities. GeekBench for Android tests the performance of your Android smartphone or tablet and compares your results (like 3DMark) with Geekbench, a leader in CPU and GPU benchmarking. Again good results.

Gaming

The Google Pixel 9 supports gaming and not just casual gaming but gaming for gamers due to the Google Tensor G4 and 12GB of RAM. Titles such as Asphalt Legends Unite, Diablo Immortals, Injustice 2, Genshin Impact, Call of Duty: Warzone, Alien Isolation and GRID: Autosport worked very well on this smartphone with minimal tweaking of the graphical settings. The Pixel 9 really channeled that portable gaming console experience and if you purchase a controller for it, it’s basically just that, a portal gaming console.

Photography

When it comes to photography, the Pixel 9 is made for this due to its 10.5MP front facing “selfie-camera” plus 50MP and 48MP lenses on the rear camera. The cameras are not only quick but the rear camera has a great macro feature for closeups, including low light plus an astrophotography mode, shame that the Aurora Australis are gone. The photos we took captured sharp images with vibrant colours and a considerable amount of detail (see Pharaoh exhibition photos below). Again, the AI also supports removing unwanted objects, people, choosing the best take of group photos and even being able to add you the photographer into a group photo. Further, 4K video recording at a very smooth 60 frames per second.

The Pixel 9 excels in low light – the last four images of the Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus from the Pharaoh exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria and the action figures showed a good range of colours and sharpness. Further, the zoom capabilities of the Pixel 9, particularly macro were faultless – just check out the jewellery images above. Even the digital zoom does a good job and when matched with the unblur and sharpen features of the AI, the camera system of the Pixel 9 is a winner.

Final Thoughts?

The Pixel 9 is a huge jump from the previous Pixel 8 and to an extent the Pixel 8a with its performance boost, integrated AI features and camera system. All this is housed under its pleasing aesthetics that feels great in your hands which comes with a sharp and vibrant scream with a high nits score. So if you’re looking to upgrade, the Pixel 9 may be the right phone for you and is currently retailing from $1349AUD (Sep 2024) for the 128GB model or $1497AUD (Sep 2024) for the 256GB model. AI is here and on the Pixel 9, it’s not a gimmick but rather the next evolutionary jump for smartphones.
