Nothing Out of the Ordinary
As a so-called Beat Saber clone, Synth Riders managed to get the attention of the VR Musicals crowd, and its latest DLC “80s Mixtape – Side A” brings even more nostalgia to the game.
80s Mixtape – Side A contains five paid tracks: “Take on Me” by A-ha, “We Built This City” by Starship, “Whip It” by Devo, “Sussudio” by Phil Collins, and last but not least “New Sensation” by INXS. The pack can be purchased for $7. There is also a new 80s arcade-inspired stage available with the update for free.
The mixed reality mode is a welcomed feature!
What the DLC truly lacks is some real hits. While tracks like “Take on Me” are great, the absence of some of the bigger names and icons from the 80s such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, George Michael, or Prince can be truly felt. Since this DLC is “Side A” of the mixtape, perhaps we can expect some more memorable songs from that era with “Side B”.
Synth Riders are now updated with a mixed reality mode that was not available during the launch. This was the most interesting part of my experience with the game since there aren’t many mixed-reality games out there. With this mode enabled, the walls of your room start to crack and the neon landscape of the futuristic Synth Riders world is revealed behind it. Still, the lack of a campaign mode that provides a feeling of continuous progression and rewards cannot be ignored.
