Summary: While best for fans of Melissa Etheridge, even if you do not know much about her this is a good chance to find out more.

Quite nice

I had heard of this artist but didn’t really know a lot about her which is why I wanted to read this book. What I know about her is that she has been around for a while in the US music scene but did not know anything about her early years or what songs she had before her big hits.

The basic structure of this story is that each chapter is one of her guitars that she owned at that point in her life and the events that happened around then. There is only one time when buying a guitar is actually mentioned or else it would just be the same story each time.

With the relatively more open attitude towards LGBITQ people these days it is quite a shock that Melissa Etheridge struggled to get her record label and the main stream audiences to accept her for who she was. Even her appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman is covered in that he would hardly even talk about her music. There is a section on the child she had with David Crosby and how she revealed that to the press in a way she could control it.

The artwork works pretty well alongside the story with some of the more creative bits still fitting with the story. Also it is a good one to put up and put down so you can read it chapter by chapter or just read a few pages at a time.

While this would be best for fans of Melissa Etheridge (there are deluxe versions available), if you have heard about her and want to know more about her life I would recommend this as an alternative to a normal biography or documentary.
