Summary: Injustice Year Zero #4 spectacularly brings back the Justice Society of America in the alternate universe of Injustice.

5

Spectacular!

Could this comic be the greatest JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA (JSA) story in the last decade?

Indeed it is and Australia’s very own comic scribe Tom Taylor should be commended on successfully bringing the Society into the pages of Injustice but more importantly, creates a diverse yet totally believable (new) Justice Society of America that features Green Lantern (Alan Scott), The Flash (Jay Garrick), Black Canary (Dinah Drake), Dr Mid-Nite (Charles McNider), Wonder Woman (Diana Prince), The Spectre (Jim Corrigan) with a double twist of delight with Doctor Fate (Inza Nelson) and Amazing-Man (Will Everett).

So shut-up and take my money because this is a Justice Society I want to read about!
– Andrew Bistak (Reviewer)

The story starts with André Chavard, one of the Boy Commandos recounting his World War II story to The Joker and Harley Quinn as he fought along side his friends, however it all went seriously wrong when Nazi sympathiser Dirk Strasser was using the amulet of the Lords of Chaos to control allied generals as directed by Adolf Hitler. Needless to say, carnage and chaos ensued until it all went green, became a blur and then a scream was heard! The legendary JSA had come to the aid of these allied soldiers. Spectacular to say the least!

That’s a level of child endangerment that even Batman would raise an eyebrow at
– The Joker

However when this mind-controlled general knows that his gig is up, more so Dirk Strasser, he puts a gun to his head to end this charade and not even the combined power Doctor Fate or Wonder Woman can stop him. This then leads Strasser to target the Society where he controls Johnny Thunder who is also the holder of his genie Yz. While Europe is torn asunder by this powerful genie, the JSA eventually find Strasser whose life is quickly ended by Hawkgirl as he proudly boasts that he killed Hawkman. This forces the Spectre to use the amulet in order to finish off a great evil as he hunts down Hitler but it comes at an emotional cost to Jim Corrigan.

You were marching your men directly into a slaughter
– The Spectre

While Corrigan knows that what he had done was wrong, he knew that the spirit of vengeance would not let this power go and asks Green Lantern to dispose of the amulet. Alan knows that this artifact is too dangerous and hides it where no one will ever reach it and that is at the bottom of the ocean, 36,000 feet down located in the Mariana Trench. Back in the present and with this information, The Joker asks Harley to fetch his swimsuit as they are journeying to the bottom of the sea!

So, an all-power genie controlled by a hero, enslaved by a Nazi working for Hitler. That’s like the world’s most messed-up Russian nesting doll.
– Harley Quinn

Wow, what a read and it was fantastic seeing the JSA back together again, even with the cameos of Starman, Mr Terrific and Liberty Belle. Taylor also brings these characters to life and he captures their voices and inner dialogue well. Adding to the story is the wonderful art of Cian Tormey that not only celebrates the Justice Society of America but as mentioned, creates one of the best JSA reads in a long time and I can’t wait to see where Year Zero ends!

Highly Recommended!
