Dark Nights Death Metal #1 Review
Summary: It all matters in the next chapter of Dark Night from Snyder and Capullo
4.4
It all matters!
The dream team of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo return with their sequel to the 2017 hit series, Dark Nights Metal and it starts with a BANG! While this series introduced the deadly Dark Multiverse, Dark Nights Death Metal revisits this concept, especially with its Grant Morrison-like existentialism that takes familiar characters and turns them into twisted counterparts as our heroes attempt to find a way back to their reality.
As the original focused on Batman and his vile dark multiverse counterpart, The Batman Who Laughs, we also learn how Wonder Woman became the Queen of Hell, including some surprises like Wally West and the new… Dinosaur Batman!
Death Metal An Anti-Crisis + Part 1+ It All Matters
– Scott Snyder
The story opens with Sargent Rock preparing for an upcoming battle with an unseen enemy and from here, we are introduced to a chainsaw wielding Wonder Woman and a very different and “thin” Swamp Thing with the three batmen from the Dark Universe bringing her a very familiar prisoner who we learn later on is none other than Wally West, The Flash who returned in Rebirth #1.
Pssst! Wonder Warden! I think you’re doing a bang-up job, ma’am!
– The Joker
Diana learns from Wally that the multiverse has changed due to deal made by The Batman Who Laughs and with Perpetua that would give her a conduit to the Dark Multiverse where the greatest crises continue to play over and over again due to the memories of the heroes which is why they are keeping them alive. Further to this, it seems that this powerful entity has been responsible for all the Crisis in the DCU, including helping Doctor Manhattan from behind the scenes.
Do as you’re told! Or it’ll be your sisters screaming in the pits!
– Dinosaur Batman (B-Rex)
While The Batman Who Laughs overhears this truth, he offers Diana a chance to survive on her very own world, however rather than play pawn to this monster, she takes her Chainsaw of Truth and supposedly ends the life of this Batman from the Dark Universe. The comic ends with the evil Robins of The Batman Who Laughs supposedly releasing Doctor Manhattan from his prison and our Batman helping Sgt Rock fight the last battle, who is missing half his body.
Just one word, really. Rise.
– Batman
Once again Snyder stacks this comic with a plethora of cameos from Lobo to the Demon, including an awesome scene with our Batman using a Black Lantern ring against the Dark Knights. Needless to say, this was a jam packed issue and while certain elements did not make sense, it will ultimately come together in classic Snyder fashion. Adding to the presentation is the amazing art of Greg Capullo who definitely brings his A-game to this series.
All in all, a fascinating insight into the next chapter of Dark Metal!
Throughout the void, beings like Perpetua are tasked with starting multiverses They do this using connective energy, born of presence, of the source.
– Wally West, The Flash
