Donkey Kong Country Returns was easily one of the best arcade games
on the Nintendo Wii which brought gamers back to the colourful
universe of Kong and Diddy which worked like a treat on this
console.
Now 3DS owners can experience this almost perfect arcade
game which even though is almost identical to the Wii version, it
incorporates a few features of the 3DS into the title such as 3D and
an additional nine stages to increase the longevity and enjoyment
factor.
At its core Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is a faux 3D side
scrolling platformer that requires players to navigate their
character from left to right as they avoid or defeat enemies,
collect power-ups and bonuses (K-O-N-G) and have a classic gaming experience
on the 3DS.
The protagonist of the title is Donkey Kong who is partnered with his side kick Diddy and together they must
defeat the annoying Tiki Tak Tribe with some challenging obstacles and boss battles thrown in
for good measure.
The game can be quite difficult at times and the player will
experience some controller rage, especially due to some of the
timing segments which can be quite unforgiving.
The developers
however have realised the difficulty in the Wii version so newcomers will be
pleased with the "New Mode" which reduces the difficulty of the
title such as giving more health, items and balloons to assist them from
death defying problems.
Apart from combat, the game features some
puzzles and other distractions to keep you busy. If you do die too
many times, the game has a Super Guide which basically walks through
the level for you.
The controls of the game are well mapped on the 3DS console which
offer fast responsive times and actually feels superior than the Wii
version, especially with the jiggling of the wiimote. That was
probably the most annoying aspect of the Wii version. All in all the gaming mechanics of this title are
flawless, it just feels right.
Graphically, the game looks identical to the Wii version but it
definitely looks more vibrant and colourful due to the smaller
screen and the use of the 3D. The depth of the 3D really makes the
game jump out, especially when you see floating bananas and other
items that appear to jump out of the screen.
One issue with
the graphics is that at times the frame rate does drop a little but
its nothing too major. Add in one of the best soundtracks in a
Nintendo game and everything comes together perfectly with the
gameplay that will have you humming the main tune from this game
long after you have stopped playing.
Final Thoughts?
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is a must have game for lovers of platformers that really takes this port to the definitive level.
From clever level designs to tricky puzzles and those challenging
boss battles, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is a game that can be
played again and again as there is so much more to find through a
second or third play through. Donkey Kong
Country Returns 3D is not only retro but its a 21st century retro
gaming experience that
gamers of all ages will enjoy.
