Call of Duty: Black Ops
Escalation
"Call of the Dead"
Featuring the talents of Sarah Michelle
Gellar, Danny Trejo, Robert Englund, Michael Rooker and George Romero, this thoroughly
entertaining add-on for the Call of Duty series entitled "Call of the
Dead" is as clichéd as they come and features almost every George Romero
Zombie stereotype imaginable with a killer atmosphere.
Unfortunately for our four protagonists,
they are stranded in an abandoned Siberian outpost and needless to say,
it's not just the cold that want them dead. With the cold and zombies
surrounding them, their search for the mysterious Element 115 has come
to a halt and to make matters worse, George Romero has been infected by
a zombie. Unfortunately Mr. Romero is not your average zombie and
powered by Element 115, he's definitely a royal pain the ass.
With similar tones of
the Ascension Zombie map, Call of the Dead has some great tension built
into the gameplay that really keeps you on the edge of your seat. From
its ghostly winter environments to the Zombies that want to feast on
your fresh body, the only friend you really have are your weapons.
Apart
from the usual suspects in terms of weaponry, the developers have added
some interesting weapons to Call of the Dead that include the all-new
Scavenger Sniper Rifle plus the prototype V-R11. So what exactly is the
V-R11? It's basically mana from heaven that reverts zombies
back to their original human forms. Consider it the Deus ex Machina of
weaponry and there is quite a bit of strategy employed behind it.
Although not as fun (unless you enjoy gibbs), the Scavenger Sniper Rifle
is almost as equally entertaining that contains explosive rounds so when
one of these touches one of the undead, you can expect to see something
messy.
The gaming environment
of Call of the Dead is huge and there's plenty of both indoor and
outdoor places to explore which can make the fighting a little tricky at
the best of
times. There are also plenty of weapons to be found but if you want to
suit up fast but with a risk, the shipwreck area is the best place to
start, although just be warned, it's not easy. The game also contains heaps of very sneaky
shortcuts so you can zip between areas quite fast such as using the zip
line on the lighthouse.
With lots of enemies and
apart from your standard grunt zombies, the
boss battle with Romero is a killer. He is easily one of the toughest
opponents that I have faced in the Call of Duty of series and this
zombie amped up on Element 115 is a real Mr. P. RICK to kill. Although
when in doubt, the Russian Dolls do play havoc to not just Romero but
also his zombie brethren.
Without spoiling the unlockables in this map, there's a few very
impressive ones to be found in the gaming environments and if you find
them all, there is a really cool surprise. However if you're just in it
for the violence and mayhem, there's plenty of this to be found in Call
of the Dead also.
Compared to some of the other DLC's for the Call of Duty
series, I think Call of the Dead is far my favourite because of the
intricacies of the map that pay homage to all things Romero. With new
weapons, enemies and some great team action to be found, Call of the
dead is a must have download from XBox Live and really goes above and
beyond the current DLC maps.
