Calypso Summer
Highlights of the West Indies Cricket Tour of Australia 1960-61 from the
ABC
‘The Greatest Test
Series Ever Played’ was what the 60/61 tour by the Windies was dubbed at
the time and over the years has maintained its enduring legendary
status. This series included the ‘Tied Test’ which has been spoken about
over the years by Richie Benaud the doyen of commentary box over the
years.
To give you an idea of
the impression this series had on the Australian populace, the ground
record at the MCG was set for a days play in a test match and quarter of
a million people came along to wish the West Indians a fond farewell as
they were paraded in a ticker-tape down Melbourne’s Collins St.
Included in this 3 DVD
box set is 530 minutes of archival film of the 5 test series, which is
all in black and white and of a quality expected of that period. It is
early 1960’s so you get maybe two cameras at the ground covering the
action. The commentary is akin to those old news reels that you
occasionally see in historical films. Finally there are interviews with
some of the players who played in that series such as Richie Benaud,
Neil Harvey, Alan Davidson, Sir Garfield Sobers, Wes Hall and Rohan
Kanhai as they remember it all these years later from both the
Australian and West Indian teams.
Calypso Summer is one
for the cricket history buff who is interested in seeing what this
famous series was like for themselves.
