Deadly Deadpool

Every now and then a comic comes along that grabs people’s attention and causes people to take notice. Arguably Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe was one of those comics. The very notion that the entire Marvel Universe could and would be killed off was bound to draw interest… the horrors within are what kept people talking. So now… some years after that fateful release, the story has been re-released, reprinted in its original form retaining the same presentation as the first time it was released so it can be “enjoyed” all over again.

Writing

As the first part of this story… it obviously has to grab readers attention and dare I say, reassure them that yes we are indeed talking about the killing off of the Marvel Universe… it isn’t just the equivalent of a comics click bait title. So the seeds of horror are sown and the fear for what is to come begins. There is enough here to give an idea of the tragedy that has already occurred and a hint of just how bad things can get. But the big question/s are yet to be answered. Why… why is Deadpool doing this, how, what is the end goal… is he (more) insane? If the cover and title lured you into grabbing this comic… the story will certainly have you on the edge of your seat as you get further into what is going on and if ever there was a story that will have you impatiently waiting for the next issue, this is it.

Artwork

Clearly we need to start with the cover here. It’s hard to go past just how iconic this cover is… some of the major heroes of the Marvel Universe, characters we are used to seeing as strong and fearless now showing absolute terror and despair… all with Deadpool standing, Hulk head in one hand and bloodied sword in the other… how could you not want to know what this is all about? The story art I feel is a bit underwhelming in comparison to such a strong cover (to be fair… that’s a hell of a cover to follow). I think my main issue with the art is that it comes across as very digital… there are a lot of colour gradients that just look “too clean”. It’s arguably just a personal aesthetic preference… but I would have preferred if not an actually hand drawn… at least more of the appearance of it having been hand drawn.

Final Thoughts

There’s a reason this comic got the attention it did when it originally came out and why it is still talked about. Not just a stunning cover with an attention grabbing title… it is legitimately an interesting story and quite compelling. If you are a Deadpool fan then you may already have this in your collection… if not then what a great opportunity to add this (in)famous tale to your collection.

Father of four, husband of one and all round oddity. Gaming at home since about 1982 with a Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Moving on to the more traditional PC genre in the years that followed with the classic Jump Joe and Alley Cat. CGA, EGA, VGA and beyond PC's have been central to my gaming but I've also enjoyed consoles and hand helds along the way (who remembers the Atari Lynx?). Would have been actor/film maker, jack of many trades master of none.
